Roman and Medieval Exeter and their Hinterlands From Isca to Escanceaster Exeter, A Place in Time Volume I
Stephen Rippon, "Roman and Medieval Exeter and their Hinterlands: From Isca to Escanceaster: Exeter, A Place in Time Volume I"
English | ISBN: 1789256151 | 2021 | 416 pages | PDF | 60 MB
This first volume, presenting research carried out through the Exeter: A Place in Time project, provides a synthesis of the development of Exeter within its local, regional, national and international hinterlands. Exeter began life in c. AD 55 as one of the most important legionary bases within early Roman Britain, and for two brief periods in the early and late 60s AD, Exeter was a critical centre of Roman power within the new province. When the legion moved to Wales the fortress was converted into the civitas capital for the Dumnonii. Its development as a town was, however, relatively slow, reflecting the gradual pace at which the region as a whole adapted to being part of the Roman world. The only evidence we have for occupation within Exeter between the 5th and 8th centuries is for a church in what was later to become the Cathedral Close. In the late 9th century, however, Exeter became a defended burh, and this was followed by the revival of urban life. Exeter's wealth was in part derived from its central role in the south-west's tin industry, and by the late 10th century Exeter was the fifth most productive mint in England. Exeter's importance continued to grow as it became an episcopal and royal centre, and excavations within Exeter have revealed important material culture assemblages that reflect its role as an international port.

Robots, Reasoning, and Reification

Robots, Reasoning, and Reification
Robots, Reasoning, and Reification by James P. Gunderson , Louise F. Gunderson
English | PDF(True) | 2009 | 206 Pages | ISBN : 0387874879 | 3.8 MB
This work was created from the statement "But, all you have to do is make the robot recognize its surroundings. Salamanders do it, and how complex are they?" Little did we know what a long path was started with those simple words. This book is a small step on that path, which we hope leads to robots that can serve as true and useful assistants to humans. At the least, we hope for some help with the tasks that are described by the 3 d**** words (dull, dirty, or dangerous). Fair warning, this work is a synthesis of ideas from many disciplines. As such, we have depended on the work of many other researchers and philosophers.

Revisiting the Arab Uprisings The Politics of a Revolutionary Moment

Revisiting the Arab Uprisings The Politics of a Revolutionary Moment
Stéphane Lacroix, "Revisiting the Arab Uprisings: The Politics of a Revolutionary Moment "
English | ISBN: 0190876085 | 2019 | 288 pages | PDF | 4 MB
Since 2013, the Middle East has experienced a double trend of chaos and civil war, on the one hand, and the return of authoritarianism, on the other. That convergence has eclipsed the political transitions that occurred in the countries whose regimes were toppled in 2011, as if they were merely footnotes to a narrative that naturally led from an "Arab Spring" to an "Arab Winter".

Religion on the Edge de-Centering and Re-Centering the Sociology of Religion

Religion on the Edge de-Centering and Re-Centering the Sociology of Religion
Courtney Bender, "Religion on the Edge: de-Centering and Re-Centering the Sociology of Religion"
English | ISBN: 0199938644 | 2012 | 312 pages | PDF | 18 MB
The thirteen essays in this volume challenge conventional scholarly approaches to the sociology of religion. They urge readers to look beyond congregational settings, beyond the United States, and to religions other than Christianity, and encourage critical engagement with religion's complex social consequences. Religion on the Edge offers groundbreaking new methodologies and models, bringing to light conceptual lacunae, re-centering what is unsettled by their use, and inviting a significant reordering of long-accepted political and economic hierarchies. The book shows how social scientists across the disciplines can engage with the sociology of religion. By challenging many of its long-standing empirical and analytic tendencies, the contributors to this volume show how their work informs and is informed by debates in other fields and the analytical purchase gained by bringing these many conversations together.
