In recent years, the transport simulation of large road networks has become far more rapid and detailed, and many exciting developments in this field have emerged.Within this volume, the authors describe the simulation of automobile, pedestrian, and rail traffic coupled to new applications, such as the embedding of traffic simulation into driving simulators, to give a more realistic environment of driverbehaviorsurroundingthe subject vehicle. New approaches to trafficsimulationare described, including the hybrid mesoscopic-microscopic model and floor-field agent-based simulation. Written by an invited panel of experts, this bookaddresses students, engineers, and scholars, as well as anyone who needs a state-of-the-art overview of transport simulation today.

Transgressive Romanticism

Transgressive Romanticism
Larry H. Peer, "Transgressive Romanticism"
English | 2018 | ISBN: 1527503615 | PDF | pages: 216 | 4.8 mb
Romanticism is an intuitive grasp of the self and the other in an interdependent imperative, non-systematic, transcendent, radically individuated, and endlessly interconnective. The set of norms Romanticism represents and broadcasts, therefore, lends itself particularly well to interdisciplinary and cross-linguistic study, essentially demanding a view coming from and constructed out of more than one discourse field. These norms radically transgress not only the cultural and literary inheritance of thinkers and artists beginning in the late eighteenth century, but do so in a transnational and comparative way unique in Western history. This collection of essays, bringing together established scholars and newer academic voices, offers fresh perspectives on what Romanticism thought itself to be by suggesting spaces in Romanticism studies needing negotiation and elaboration. Presenting a protocol that escapes the circular referentiality of Romanticism studies typically limited to one academic discipline or one language area, this volume works through topics and ideas including Hegelian reflections, lyric poetry, stage drama, music, political implications, and even vampires, outlaws and zombies.

Transformations of the Radical Left in Southern Europe Bringing Society Back In

Transformations of the Radical Left in Southern Europe Bringing Society Back In
Myrto Tsakatika, Marco Lisi, "Transformations of the Radical Left in Southern Europe: Bringing Society Back In?"
English | 2013 | ISBN: 0415869803, 1138377953 | PDF | pages: 137 | 9.3 mb
Political parties are alleged to be turning their backs to civil society; they are said to discourage the active participation of their members and to distance themselves from the privileged relations to affiliated social organisations they once prized. Instead, parties are broadly believed to be directing their efforts towards capturing government office and the resources that come with it, neglecting linkage to their social roots. Transformations of the Radical Left in Southern Europe questions this widely shared view. Exploring the social linkage strategies of the most relevant radical left parties in Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece and Cyprus in depth, this book demonstrates that the members of the European radical left party family continue to prioritise social linkage, despite their increasingly office-seeking orientation. Between the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the current economic crisis they have been tirelessly experimenting with diverse new forms of party organisation that have enabled them to return to their social roots. The main lesson drawn from the studies in this book is that party ideology and a party's position in the national political arena go a long way towards explaining the extent to which political parties prioritise social linkage.

Trade Union Activism in the Nordic Countries Since 1900

Trade Union Activism in the Nordic Countries Since 1900
Trade Union Activism in the Nordic Countries Since 1900
English | 2023 | ISBN: 3031089863 | 390 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 4.3 MB
Providing a Nordic historical perspective, this collection aims to further our understanding of trade union activism and its role in modern society. Contributions from a range of leading scholars analyse the organisational conditions of mobilisation that were deployed by Nordic unionists, and explore the way that they interacted with other forms of social and political protest during the twentieth century. Covering illegal or so-called wildcat strikes, blockades, demonstrations and other activist measures, the authors examine the way that trade union activism in the Nordic countries aimed to move the political combat zone from the meeting rooms of the respective confederations into the streets and the public domain. The collection focuses on cases from Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland, but comparisons are also made with countries such as Iceland, Germany, and the USA. Exploring the ways in which political parties have intervened in Nordic trade union activism since the early twentieth century, this unique collection offers new insights for those interested in labour market dynamics and the complex process behind the formation of salary and employment conditions.
