Ritual Innovation in the Hebrew Bible and Early Judaism (Beihefte Zur Zeitschrift Für Die Alttestamentliche Wissenschaft

Ritual Innovation in the Hebrew Bible and Early Judaism (Beihefte Zur Zeitschrift Für Die Alttestamentliche Wissenschaft
Nathan MacDonald, "Ritual Innovation in the Hebrew Bible and Early Judaism (Beihefte Zur Zeitschrift Für Die Alttestamentliche Wissenschaft"
English | ISBN: 3110372738 | 2016 | 180 pages | EPUB | 20 MB
Are the rituals in the Hebrew Bible of great antiquity, practiced unchanged from earliest times, or are they the products of later innovators? The canonical text is clear: ritual innovation is repudiated as when Jeroboam I of Israel inaugurate a novel cult at Bethel and Dan. Most rituals are traced back to Moses. From Julius Wellhausen to Jacob Milgrom, this issue has divided critical scholarship. With the rich documentation from the late Second Temple period, such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, it is apparent that rituals were changed. Were such rituals practiced, or were they forms of textual imagination? How do rituals change and how are such changes authorized? Do textual innovation and ritual innovation relate? What light might ritual changes between the Hebrew Bible and late Second Temple texts shed on the history of ritual in the Hebrew Bible? The essays in this volume engage the various issues that arise when rituals are considered as practices that may be invented and subject to change. A number of essays examine how biblical texts show evidence of changing ritual practices, some use textual change to discuss related changes in ritual practice, while others discuss evidence for ritual change from material culture.

Reproductive Realities in Modern China

Reproductive Realities in Modern China
Reproductive Realities in Modern China: Birth Control and Abortion, 1911-2021
English | 2023 | ISBN: 1316515311 | 263 Pages | PDF | 5 MB
Lasting from 1979 to 2015, China's One Child Policy is often remembered as one of the most ambitious social engineering projects to date and considered emblematic of global efforts to regulate population growth during the twentieth century. Drawing on a rich combination of archival research and oral history, Sarah Mellors Rodriguez analyses how ordinary people, particularly women, navigated China's shifting fertility policies before and during the One Child Policy era. She examines the implementation and reception of these policies and reveals that they were often contradictory and unevenly enforced, as men and women challenged, reworked, and co-opted state policies to suit their own needs. By situating the One Child Policy within the longer history of birth control and abortion in China, Reproductive Realities in Modern China exposes important historical continuities, such as the enduring reliance on abortion as contraception and the precariousness of state control over reproduction.

Remaking Radicalism A Grassroots Documentary Reader of the United States, 1973-2001

Remaking Radicalism A Grassroots Documentary Reader of the United States, 1973-2001
Emily K. Hobson, "Remaking Radicalism: A Grassroots Documentary Reader of the United States, 1973-2001 "
English | ISBN: 0820357251 | 2020 | 528 pages | PDF | 4 MB
This book brings together documents from multiple radical movements in the recent United States from 1973 through 2001. These years are typically viewed as an era of neoliberalism, dominated by conservative retrenchment, the intensified programs of privatization and incarceration, dramatic cuts to social welfare, and the undermining of labor, antiracist, and feminist advances. Yet activists from the period proved tenacious in the face of upheaval, resourceful in creating new tactics, and dedicated to learning from one another. Persistent and resolute, activists did more than just keep radical legacies alive. They remade radicalism―bridging differences of identity and ideology often assumed to cleave movements, grappling with the eradication of liberal promises, and turning to movement cultures as the source of a just future.
