Pinocchio Goes Postmodern Perils of a Puppet in the United States

Pinocchio Goes Postmodern Perils of a Puppet in the United States
Pinocchio Goes Postmodern: Perils of a Puppet in the United States (Children's Literature and Culture) by Richard Wunderlich, Thomas J. Morrissey
English | May 15, 2002 | ISBN: 0815338961, 0415993245 | True PDF | 276 pages | 18 MB
In the first full-length study in English of Carlo Collodi's The Adventures of Pinocchio, the authors show how the checkered history of the puppet illuminates social change from the pre World War One era to the present. The authors argue that most Americans know a trivialized, diluted version of the tale, one such source is Disney's perennial classic. The authors also discover that when adults are introduced to the 'real' story, they often deem it as unsuitable for children.

Physics and Mechanics of New Materials and Their Applications

Physics and Mechanics of New Materials and Their Applications
Physics and Mechanics of New Materials and Their Applications
English | 2023 | ISBN: 3031215710 | 1082 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 177 MB
This book presents 50 selected peer-reviewed contributions from the 10th Anniversary International Conference on "Physics and Mechanics of New Materials and Their Applications", PHENMA 2021-2022 (23-27 May, 2022, Divnomorsk, Russia), focusing on processing techniques, physics, mechanics, and applications of advanced materials. The book describes a broad spectrum of promising nanostructures, crystal structures, materials, and composites with unique properties. It presents nanotechnological design approaches, environmental-friendly processing techniques, and physicochemical as well as mechanical studies of advanced materials. The selected contributions describe recent progress in computational materials science methods and algorithms (in particular, finite-element and finite-difference modelling) applied to various technological, mechanical, and physical problems. The presented results are important for ongoing efforts concerning the theory, modelling, and testing of advanced materials. Other results are devoted to promising devices with higher accuracy, increased longevity, and greater potential to work effectively under critical temperatures, high pressure, and in aggressive environments.

Philosophy as Samvada and Svaraj Dialogical Meditations on Daya Krishna and Ramchandra Gandhi

Philosophy as Samvada and Svaraj Dialogical Meditations on Daya Krishna and Ramchandra Gandhi
Philosophy as Samvada and Svaraj: Dialogical Meditations on Daya Krishna and Ramchandra Gandhi By Shail Mayaram (editor)
2014 | 352 Pages | ISBN: 8132111214 | PDF | 3 MB
Philosophy as Samvada and Svaraj discusses Daya Krishna and Ramchandra Gandhi's respective intellectual contributions and speculates how one might take forward the work of the two persons who were among the most brilliant minds of our times. Both Daya Krishna and Ramchandra Gandhi emphasized freedom and autonomy of thought and upheld the importance of samvada, somewhat inadequate in its English translation as dialogue. And both of them were philosophers concerned with how philosophy might seek its svaraj, free from the orientalist hold of the religious, the colonial crippling of indigenous languages and institutions and the structures and categories of un-freedom that continue to haunt inhabitants of West and non-West. Philosophy must involve samvada―an open dialogue and intimate encounter between self and other. Both philosophers experimented with these concepts and were enormously creative. This book is a testament not only to the core values of philosophy, but also to how these values can be carried forward by new weaves of tradition and modernity.

Pearls of Persia The Philosophical Poetry of Nasir-i Khusraw

Pearls of Persia The Philosophical Poetry of Nasir-i Khusraw
Pearls of Persia: The Philosophical Poetry of Nasir-i Khusraw By Alice C. Hunsberger (editor)
2013 | 320 Pages | ISBN: 1780761309 | PDF | 53 MB
I.B.Tauris in association with the Institute of Ismaili StudiesNasir-i Khusraw is a major literary figure in medieval Persian culture. He was a Muslim philosopher, poet, travel writer, and Ismaili da'i who lived a thousand years ago in the lands known today as Afghanistan, Iran, and Tajikistan. Although known in the West mainly for his Safarnama, or travelogue, which describes his seven-year journey from Khurasan, in the eastern Islamic lands, to Cairo, the city of the Fatimid imam-caliphs, his poetry and ideas are less familiar. Yet, over the centuries, Persian-speaking lands have consistently ranked him as one of the finest poets of all time. But today, even among those who know Nasir-i Khusraw's poetry, few understand the philosophical and Ismaili concepts the poet expounds. And while mystical and epic genres of Persian poetry are memorized and studied, the genre of philosophical poetry in Persian remains basically unexplored. This collection of studies seeks to redress the balance. Originally presented at a conference at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London in 2005 to commemorate the millenary of Nasir-i Khusraw's birth, the papers published here examine his poetry both for philosophical meaning and poetic method. They address a variety of topics, ranging from metaphysics, cosmology, and ontology to prophecy, as well as rhythm and structure, and analysis of individual poems and authorship.

Past Matters Heritage and Planning History Case Studies from the Pacific Rim

Past Matters Heritage and Planning History Case Studies from the Pacific Rim
Past Matters: Heritage and Planning History Case Studies from the Pacific Rim By Caroline Miller and Michael Roche
2007 | 305 Pages | ISBN: 1847181996 | PDF | 4 MB
Past Matters brings together a group of largely Australian and New Zealand academics who in a series of case studies consider how planning concepts were adopted, adjusted, adapted and extended in a Pacific Rim setting. The early chapters explore the interplay between British and American planning models and local circumstances in Australia, Japan, and New Zealand. The main body of chapters recount difficulties faced by indigenous peoples with respect to housing needs and more generally re-asserting themselves in what began as colonial urban areas as well as others that look at community meanings, liberalism and exclusion on the street, and the power of sectional interests. The latter chapters also pose questions about urban heritage in terms of what and whose interests are at stake in these debates. The volume concludes with two convergent chapters that outline some practices by which heritage of a more day to day suburban sort can be protected within a planning system. The collection centres on Australia and New Zealand but extends to include chapters on Canada and Japan. The viewpoints offered serve as a gentle reminder of the limitations of Metropolitian Theory .
