A Woman's Kingdom Noblewomen and the Control of Property in Russia, 1700-1861

A Woman's Kingdom Noblewomen and the Control of Property in Russia, 1700-1861
A Woman's Kingdom: Noblewomen and the Control of Property in Russia, 1700-1861 By Michelle Lamarche Marrese
2002 | 296 Pages | ISBN: 0801439116 | PDF | 30 MB
In A Woman's Kingdom, Michelle Lamarche Marrese explores the development of Russian noblewomen's unusual property rights. In contrast to women in Western Europe, who could not control their assets during marriage until the second half of the nineteenth century, married women in Russia enjoyed the right to alienate and manage their fortunes beginning in 1753. Marrese traces the extension of noblewomen's right to property and places this story in the broader context of the evolution of private property in Russia before the Great Reforms of the 1860s. Historians have often dismissed women's property rights as meaningless. In the patriarchal society of Imperial Russia, a married woman could neither work nor travel without her husband's permission, and divorce was all but unattainable. Yet, through a detailed analysis of women's property rights from the Petrine era through the abolition of serfdom in 1861, Marrese demonstrates the significance of noblewomen's proprietary power. She concludes that Russian noblewomen were unique not only for the range of property rights available to them, but also for the active exercise of their legal prerogatives.A remarkably broad source base provides a solid foundation for Marrese's conclusions. These sources comprise more than eight thousand transactions from notarial records documenting a variety of property transfers, property disputes brought to the Senate, noble family papers, and a vast memoir literature. A Woman's Kingdom stands as a masterful challenge to the existing, androcentric view of noble society in Russia before Emancipation.

Our planet's surface is more water than land. As you'll learn from this book, the air we need to breathe carries moisture and there's a lot of air carrying moisture all around us and above us. For reasons I explain later in this book, warm air carries more moisture than cool air. So, it's not difficult to see that there could be a connection between global warming and moisture. What I explore in this book is the wide-ranging effects of moisture in our daily life. Things that you might have thought have something to do with water or moisture but have not had tools available to you to work out if moisture is actually involved. This book provides you with examples and tools towards gaining an understanding of moisture related events.

Rockabilly had its roots in country, blues, folk, hillbilly, R&B, boogie-woogie and most other indigenous Deep South forms of popular song that you could strum three chords along to or howl down a cheap microphone. It was young people's music, made almost entirely by the first wave of teenagers, despised by adults in general and the country music establishment in particular. Its pioneer exponent, Elvis, eventually become respectable in the eyes of straight society but he was the exception.

Raymond Luczak, "A Quiet Foghorn: More Notes from a Deaf Gay Life"
English | ISBN: 1954622112 | 2022 | 176 pages | EPUB | 719 KB
In this collection of essays, Raymond Luczak once again offers readers powerful and deeply personal reflections on his experiences as a Deaf gay man. He begins his journey with the printed word where lipreading is not required, and discovers a family of sorts through the writings of Walt Whitman and others; he ventures deeper into the queer community with thoughts on ageism, disability, and radical faeries. Luczak explores the many nuances within the Deaf community and the audist attitudes of hearing people, particularly in the media, and takes a detour into ASL gloss poetry. He speculates on what the Deaf community will look like a century from now and ends with a long bike ride that celebrates the ongoing questions of being a Deaf gay man.
