Haydn's Symphonic Forms Essays in Compositional Logic

Haydn's Symphonic Forms Essays in Compositional Logic
Haydn's Symphonic Forms: Essays in Compositional Logic By Ethan Haimo
1995 | 320 Pages | ISBN: 0198163924 | PDF | 15 MB
Looking in detail at Haydn's symphonies, this book attempts to clarify what Haydn's fundamental principles of formal logic might have been. It shows how Haydn employed those basic compositional principles to structure his forms, providing explanations that account for specific details ofindividual movements as well as the relationships between the movements. Beyond what they show about Haydn's formal thought and the individual works discussed, the discussions in this book also stress the idea that compositions cannot be analyzed in a meaningful manner if the analysis is divorcedfrom the work's historical context.

Gregory of Nyssa as Biographer Weaving Lives for Virtuous Readers
Gregory of Nyssa as Biographer: Weaving Lives for Virtuous Readers By Allison L Gray
2021 | 303 Pages | ISBN: 316157558X | PDF | 3 MB
In this study, Allison L. Gray analyzes three biographical narratives by the fourth-century Christian theologian Gregory of Nyssa (335-395 CE). When the Life of Moses, the Life of Macrina, and the Life of Gregory Thaumaturgus are examined in light of Greco-Roman rhetoric, biography, hagiography, and the history of education, it becomes evident that Gregory's attention to audience is critical to understanding the texts' form and function. Gregory recounts the lives of exemplary figures to inform his readers about lived virtue while simultaneously preparing them to be skilled readers and interpreters. He adopts and adapts familiar rhetorical and literary techniques to imagine, construct, and teach a new sort of ideal audience, training Christians to interpret Scripture. This study contributes to a more complete picture of how early Christian biographical writing shaped an emerging Christian paideia

Genocide Never Sleeps Living Law at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda

Genocide Never Sleeps Living Law at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda
Nigel Eltringham, "Genocide Never Sleeps: Living Law at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda "
English | ISBN: 1108485596 | 2019 | 234 pages | PDF | 2 MB
Accounts of international criminal courts have tended to consist of reflections on abstract legal texts, on judgements and trial transcripts. Genocide Never Sleeps, based on ethnographic research at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), provides an alternative account, describing a messy, flawed human process in which legal practitioners faced with novel challenges sought to reconfigure long-standing habits and opinions while maintaining a commitment to 'justice'. From the challenges of simultaneous translation to collaborating with colleagues from different legal traditions, legal practitioners were forced to scrutinise that which normally remains assumed in domestic law. By providing an account of this process, Genocide Never Sleeps not only provides a unique insight into the exceptional nature of the ad hoc, improvised ICTR and the day-to-day practice of international criminal justice, but also holds up for fresh inspection much that is naturalised and assumed in unexceptional, domestic legal processes.
