"IAS has been held every two years since 1986 providing venue for the latest accomplishments and innovations in advanced intelligent autonomous systems. New technologies and application domains continuously pose new challenges to be overcome in order to apply intelligent autonomous systems in a reliable and user-independent way in areas ranging from industrial applications to professional service and household domains. The present book contains the papers presented at the 17th International Conference on Intelligent Autonomous Systems (IAS-17), which was held from June 13-16, 2022, in Zagreb, Croatia. In our view, 62 papers, authored by 196 authors from 19 countries, are a testimony to the appeal of the conference considering travel restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Our special thanks go to the authors and the reviewers for their effort-the results of their joint work are visible in this book. We look forward to seeing you at IAS-18 in 2023 in Suwon, South Korea!"

Insurgent Sepoys Europe Views the Revolt of 1857

Insurgent Sepoys Europe Views the Revolt of 1857
Insurgent Sepoys: Europe Views the Revolt of 1857 By Shaswati Mazumdar
2011 | 305 Pages | ISBN: 0415597994 | PDF | 3 MB
The Revolt of 1857 in India has so far largely been viewed as an event that was of interest to British and Indian scholars investigating the various consequences of British colonial rule in India. What has remained out of the focus of study during the last 150 years is the possible impact of the Revolt elsewhere, its so to say international dimension: what, in particular, was the reaction in Europe where elemental social and political transformations were underway. Whatever the varied nature of the reactions, the space given to the Revolt in many European newspapers and journals while it was in progress is certainly extensive. What is more, representations of and reflections on the Revolt appeared both during the event and for long after its suppression, above all in forms of popular fiction but also in historical accounts, letters, reminiscences and other forms of writing. The collection of essays in this volume ventures into this unexplored terrain and offers a first look at some of these European responses.

Institutional Slavery Slaveholding Churches, Schools, Colleges, and Businesses in Virginia, 1680-1860

Institutional Slavery Slaveholding Churches, Schools, Colleges, and Businesses in Virginia, 1680-1860
Jennifer Oast, "Institutional Slavery: Slaveholding Churches, Schools, Colleges, and Businesses in Virginia, 1680-1860"
English | ISBN: 1107105277 | 2016 | 280 pages | PDF | 4 MB
The traditional image of slavery begins with a master and a slave. However, not all slaves had traditional masters; some were owned instead by institutions, such as church congregations, schools, colleges, and businesses. This practice was pervasive in early Virginia; its educational, religious, and philanthropic institutions were literally built on the backs of slaves. Virginia's first industrial economy was also developed with the skilled labor of African American slaves. This book focuses on institutional slavery in Virginia as it was practiced by the Anglican and Presbyterian churches, free schools, and four universities: the College of William and Mary, Hampden-Sydney College, the University of Virginia, and Hollins College. It also examines the use of slave labor by businesses and the Commonwealth of Virginia in industrial endeavors. This is not only an account of how institutions used slavery to further their missions, but also of the slaves who belonged to institutions.
