2008 | 688 Pages | ISBN: 0802095674 | PDF | 6 MB
Edited, with Introduction, Commentary, Appendices, Glossary, and Bibliography by R. D. Fulk, Robert E. Bjork & John D. Niles. With a Foreword by Helen Damico.Fourth Edition Based on the Third Edition with First and Second Supplements, of "Beowulf and the Fight at Finnsburg", Edited by Fr. Klaeber.Frederick Klaeber's "Beowulf" has long been the standard edition for study by students and advanced scholars alike. Its wide-ranging coverage of scholarship, its comprehensive philological aids, and its exceptionally thorough notes and glossary have ensured its continued use in spite of the fact that the book has remained largely unaltered since 1936. The fourth edition has been prepared with the aim of updating the scholarship while preserving the aspects of Klaeber's work that have made it useful to students of literature, linguists, historians, folklorists, manuscript specialists, archaeologists, and theorists of culture.A revised Introduction and Commentary incorporates the vast store of scholarship on "Beowulf" that has appeared since 1950. It brings readers up to date on areas of scholarship that have been controversial since the last edition, including the construction of the unique manuscript and views on the poem's date and unity of composition. The lightly revised text incorporates the best textual criticism of the intervening years, and the expanded Commentary furnishes detailed bibliographic guidance to discussion of textual cruces, as well as to modern and contemporary critical concerns. Aids to pronunciation have been added to the text, and advances in the study of the poem's language are addressed throughout. Readers will find that the book remains recognizably Klaeber's work, but with altered and added features designed to render it as useful today as it has ever been.

Kibbutz, Utopia and Politics: The Life and Times of Meir Yaari, 1897-1987 By Aviva Halamish, Lenn Schramm
2017 | 496 Pages | ISBN: 161811624X | PDF | 7 MB
Meir Yaari (1897-1987) was the leader of Hashomer Hatza'ir, a movement which took an active part in shaping the history of the Jewish people in the crucial decades of the twentieth century. Its Kibbutzim had a leading role in matters of aliyah, settlement, and defense in mandatory Palestine and then independent Israel, and its members were among the organizers of Jewish resistance and revolt during the Holocaust. This biography discusses pivotal issues in the history of the Jewish people and the State of Israel, such as the friction between Zionism and socialism, the Arab question, the absorption of new immigrants, and generation gaps and conflicts. The book blends individual and collective perspectives and never loses sight of the tension between ideology and reality.

Karl Popper Professional Philosopher and Public Intellectual

Karl Popper Professional Philosopher and Public Intellectual
Friedel Weinert, "Karl Popper: Professional Philosopher and Public Intellectual "
English | ISBN: 3031154231 | 2022 | 252 pages | PDF | 6 MB
Karl R. Popper is widely regarded as one of the most influential 20th century philosophers. In this new biography, Weinert provides a comprehensive and accessible account of his life and work, also addressing Popper's role as a public intellectual. Drawing on a wide range of sources and interviews with former colleagues and collaborators, he recounts not only the wide interest from the scientific community, but also the inspiration that politicians took from Popper's work. The book surveys the vast and varied intellectual landscape of Popper's philosophical journey during his long career: from the natural and social sciences (physics, evolution, sociology) to political philosophy and the philosophy of mind. It pays significant attention to Popper's critical method - i.e., the notion that ideas and institutions should be exposed to rigorous tests - the approach that led him to a fervent defence of objectivity, rationality and realism, against all forms of irrationalism, as well as a passionate advocacy of freedom, social justice and liberal democracy, against all forms of authoritarianism. The book brings Popper into focus as a modern Enlightenment philosopher.

Jungle Laboratories Mexican Peasants, National Projects, and the Making of the Pill

Jungle Laboratories Mexican Peasants, National Projects, and the Making of the Pill
Gabriela Soto Laveaga, "Jungle Laboratories: Mexican Peasants, National Projects, and the Making of the Pill"
English | 2009 | pages: 336 | ISBN: 0822346052 | PDF | 9,1 mb
In the 1940s chemists discovered that barbasco, a wild yam indigenous to Mexico, could be used to mass-produce synthetic steroid hormones. Barbasco spurred the development of new drugs, including cortisone and the first viable oral contraceptives, and positioned Mexico as a major player in the global pharmaceutical industry. Yet few people today are aware of Mexico's role in achieving these advances in modern medicine. In Jungle Laboratories, Gabriela Soto Laveaga reconstructs the story of how rural yam pickers, international pharmaceutical companies, and the Mexican state collaborated and collided over the barbasco. By so doing, she sheds important light on a crucial period in Mexican history and challenges us to reconsider who can produce science.

Judaism in a Digital Age An Ancient Tradition Confronts a Transformative Era

Judaism in a Digital Age An Ancient Tradition Confronts a Transformative Era
Danny Schiff, "Judaism in a Digital Age: An Ancient Tradition Confronts a Transformative Era"
English | ISBN: 3031179919 | 2023 | 225 pages | PDF | 4 MB
What is the next chapter in Judaism's story, the next step in its journey? The dramatic changes of recent decades invite us to explore what role Judaism is to play in this new era. As the digital future becomes the present, Danny Schiff makes the case that the period known as "modernity" has come to an end. Noting the declining strength of Conservative and Reform Judaism, the largest US Jewish movements of modernity, he argues for new iterations of Judaism to arise in response to the myriad of weighty questions that now confront us about what it means to be human. Here is an account of the digital age through a Jewish lens, in which Schiff examines Jewish teachings and traditions, exploring what moral insight they might have to offer in this period of great flux. He marshals the thought of well-known futurists such as Ray Kurzweil and Yuval Noah Harari to forecast the exponentially larger shifts in the human condition that lie ahead, and proposes that a countercultural Judaism could have renewed relevance in addressing some of the pressing issues that confront humanity in the twenty-first century.

John Hick's Religious Pluralism in Global Perspective

John Hick's Religious Pluralism in Global Perspective
Sharada Sugirtharajah, "John Hick's Religious Pluralism in Global Perspective "
English | ISBN: 3031110072 | 2023 | 357 pages | PDF | 6 MB
This volume contains fresh scholarly contributions to mark the birth centenary of John Hick, the internationally well-known philosopher of religion, whose works continue to have significant global relevance in today's religiously diverse and conflict-ridden world. His writings have reset the parameters of religious pluralism. Up till now, Hick's religious pluralism has been mainly seen in relation to the Western context where Christianity is the predominant religion. This volume includes both Western and non-Western engagement with his thinking in contexts such as Japan, China, Korea, Nigeria, and India, where Christianity is a minority religion with little political power. Its distinctiveness lies in widening the debate on religious pluralism by bringing Hick's pluralistic hypothesis into a constructive cross-cultural and interreligious conversation with scholars of Hinduism, Jainism, Daoism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam and African traditional religions. In doing so, this collection examines how Hick's philosophy of religious pluralism has been received, appropriated and appraised by these scholars. It has been appreciated and critiqued in equal measure, and continues to impact on current thinking on religious pluralism. This volume makes a significant contribution to the debate initiated by Hick.
