The National Environmental Policy Act Judicial Misconstruction, Legislative Indifference, & Executive Neglect

The National Environmental Policy Act Judicial Misconstruction, Legislative Indifference, & Executive Neglect
Matthew J. Lindstrom, Zachary A. Smith, Lynton K. Caldwell, "The National Environmental Policy Act: Judicial Misconstruction, Legislative Indifference, & Executive Neglect"
English | 2002 | ISBN: 1585441252, 1603440488 | PDF | pages: 206 | 1.3 mb
Environmental degradation and the compromised integrity of the earth's ecological system were growing public concerns in the mid to late 1960s. These issues spurred Congress to pass the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA), the first law to focus such environmental concerns into a comprehensive national policy. The new legislation encompassed an array of environmental values and ethics, as well as administrative tools to achieve the ecological goals of the nation while taking into account other important societal needs. Though NEPA has had a positive effect on U.S. environmental policy and the national quality of life, this challenging new book shows how federal courts and agencies have failed to implement many of the values and goals fundamental to the success of NEPA. To explain this divergence, authors Matthew J. Lindstrom and Zachary A. Smith examine NEPA's origins, address how NEPA has been implemented and enforced, and highlight the shortcomings of its practice. Lindstrom and Smith strongly argue that if NEPA were fully and properly implemented, it would prove to be a valuable and realistic tool for balancing the needs of the world population and the protection of the earth's environment. They offer a new, hopeful look at how the law's structure can be properly utilized in order to give future generations hope of living on a sustainable planet. This book is well suited for audiences interested in public policy formation and implementation, especially environmental policy administrators, environmental historians, and those involved in environmental law, its policy, and its politics.

The Nanny State Made Me A Story of Britain and How to Save it

The Nanny State Made Me A Story of Britain and How to Save it
The Nanny State Made Me: A Story of Britain and How to Save it By Stuart Maconie
2020 | 304 Pages | ISBN: 1529102413 | EPUB | 1 MB
'He is as funny as Bryson and as wise as Orwell' ObserverIt was the spirit of our finest hour, the backbone of our post-war greatness, and it promoted some of the boldest and most brilliant schemes this isle has ever produced: it was the Welfare State, and it made you and I. But now it's under threat, and we need to save it.In this timely and provocative book, Stuart Maconie tells Britain's Welfare State story through his own history of growing up as a northern working class boy. What was so bad about properly funded hospitals, decent working conditions and affordable houses? And what was so wrong about student grants, free eye tests and council houses? And where did it all go so wrong? Stuart looks toward Britain's future, making an emotional case for believing in more than profit and loss; and championing a just, fairer society.

The Myth of Nations The Medieval Origins of Europe

The Myth of Nations The Medieval Origins of Europe
Patrick J. Geary, "The Myth of Nations: The Medieval Origins of Europe."
English | 2001 | ISBN: 0691090548, 0691114811 | PDF | pages: 223 | 13.1 mb
Modern-day Europeans by the millions proudly trace back their national identities to the Celts, Franks, Gauls, Goths, Huns, or Serbs-or some combination of the various peoples who inhabited, traversed, or pillaged their continent more than a thousand years ago. According to Patrick Geary, this is historical nonsense. The idea that national character is fixed for all time in a simpler, distant past is groundless, he argues in this unflinching reconsideration of European nationhood. Few of the peoples that many Europeans honor as sharing their sense of ''nation'' had comparably homogeneous identities; even the Huns, he points out, were firmly united only under Attila's ten-year reign.
