Nationalism and the Nordic Imagination Swedish Art of the 1890s

Nationalism and the Nordic Imagination Swedish Art of the 1890s
Nationalism and the Nordic Imagination: Swedish Art of the 1890s By Michelle Facos
1998 | 256 Pages | ISBN: 0520206266 | PDF | 6 MB
This richly illustrated book is a lucid introduction to a largely neglected manifestation of Modernism that came out of fin-de-siècle Sweden. Michelle Facos presents the first study in English to seriously examine the movement known as Swedish National Romanticism. Her work is especially valuable in showing how the movement's primitivist tendencies were related to, but different from, similar cultural forces in Germany and other parts of Europe at that time. Facos shows how a small group of Swedish artists espoused a politically progressive, culturally conservative form of nationalism. These artists―among them Carl Larsson, Bruno Liljefors, and Hanna Hirsch Pauli―produced a specifically national Swedish art by focusing on indigenous history, legends, and folk tales as well as uniquely Swedish-Nordic values, geography, and ethnography. Their breathtaking images of the Nordic landscape shaped a communal "Folk" identity that accented regionalism, solidarity, and attachment to the past and protested against the perceived dangers of capitalist industrialism and urban expansion. By 1900 Sweden was on its way to realizing a society of social, economic, and political equality, and the National Romantic painters were no longer renegades. Facos's portrayal of their movement will attract readers in the arts, historians, folklorists, cultural anthropologists, and sociologists.

Migration in the Global Political Economy By Nicola Phillips
2011 | 338 Pages | ISBN: 1588267628 | PDF | 2 MB
How does the evolution of global capitalism shape patterns and processes of migration? How does migration in turn shape and intersect with the forces at work in the global economy? How should we understand the relationship between migration and development, and how is migration connected with patterns of poverty and inequality? How are processes of migration and immigration governed in different parts of the world? The authors of Migration in the Global Political Economy tackle these questions in a set of engaging and authoritative chapters.Mobilizing the core insights of critical IPE scholarship and combining analysis of the big picture with attention to particular regions, countries, and actors, the authors seek to bring the increasingly important processes of migration to the center of inquiries into globalization and its social underpinnings.

Midnight in the Century (NYRB Classics)

Midnight in the Century (NYRB Classics)
Midnight in the Century (NYRB Classics) By Victor Serge
2014 | 240 Pages | ISBN: 1590177703 | PDF | 3 MB
In 1933, Victor Serge was arrested by Stalin's police, interrogated, and held in solitary confinement for more than eighty days. Released, he spent two years in exile in remote Orenburg. These experiences were the inspiration for Midnight in the Century, Serge's searching novel about revolutionaries living in the shadow of Stalin's betrayal of the revolution. Among the exiles gathered in the town of Chenor, or Black-Waters, are the granite-faced Old Bolshevik Ryzhik, stoic yet gentle Varvara, and Rodion, a young, self-educated worker who is trying to make sense of the world and history. They struggle in the unlikely company of Russian Orthodox Old Believers who are also suffering for their faith. Against unbelievable odds, the young Rodion will escape captivity and find a new life in the wild. Surviving the dark winter night of the soul, he rediscovers the only real, and most radical, form of resistance: hope.
