Debating Tudor policy in sixteenth-century Ireland 'Reform' treatises and political discourse

Debating Tudor policy in sixteenth-century Ireland 'Reform' treatises and political discourse
David Heffernan, "Debating Tudor policy in sixteenth-century Ireland: 'Reform' treatises and political discourse "
English | ISBN: 1526118165 | 2018 | 272 pages | EPUB | 609 KB
Ireland was conquered and gradually colonized by the Tudors during the sixteenth century. This much is clear but whether or not this was the actual goal of English policy in Ireland at that time has long been debated by historians. Debating Tudor policy in sixteenth-century Ireland examines a set of sources which provide a unique insight into English rule in Tudor Ireland. These are policy papers or treatises written at the time on how to 'reform' Ireland and bring it under greater crown control. The study constitutes the first systematic study of the approximately six-hundred such treatises to have survived. In doing so it sheds light on how the Tudors arrived at the policies they decided to implement in Ireland and examines how English officials and other parties within Ireland viewed the Irish and the country at that time.

Debates on Stalinism

Debates on Stalinism
Mark Edele, "Debates on Stalinism "
English | ISBN: 1784994308 | 2020 | 312 pages | EPUB | 641 KB
Debates on Stalinism introduces major debates about Stalinism during and after the Cold War. Did 'Stalinism' form a system in its own right or was it a mere stage in the overall development of Soviet society? Was it an aberration from Leninism or the logical conclusion of Marxism? Was its violence the revenge of the Russian past or the result of a revolutionary mindset? Was Stalinism the work of a madman or the product of social forces beyond his control? The book shows the complexities of historiographical debates, where evidence, politics, personality, and biography are strongly entangled. Debates on Stalinism allows readers to better understand not only the history of history writing, but also contemporary controversies and conflicts in the successor states of the Soviet Union, in particular Russia and Ukraine.

Death of a Suburban Dream Race and Schools in Compton, California

Death of a Suburban Dream Race and Schools in Compton, California
Emily E. Straus, "Death of a Suburban Dream: Race and Schools in Compton, California "
English | ISBN: 0812245989 | 2014 | 328 pages | EPUB | 1389 KB
Compton, California, is often associated in the public mind with urban America's toughest problems, including economic disinvestment, gang violence, and failing public schools. Before it became synonymous with inner-city decay, however, Compton's affordability, proximity to manufacturing jobs, and location ten miles outside downtown Los Angeles made it attractive to aspiring suburbanites seeking single-family homes and quality schools. As Compton faced challenges in the twentieth century, and as the majority population shifted from white to African American and then to Latino, the battle for control over the school district became symbolic of Compton's economic, social, and political crises.

Death machines The ethics of violent technologies

Death machines The ethics of violent technologies
Elke Schwarz, "Death machines: The ethics of violent technologies"
English | ISBN: 1526114828 | 2018 | 240 pages | EPUB | 404 KB
As innovations in military technologies race toward ever-greater levels of automation and autonomy, debates over the ethics of violent technologies tread water. Death Machines reframes these debates, arguing that the way we conceive of the ethics of contemporary warfare is itself imbued with a set of bio-technological rationalities that work as limits. The task for critical thought must therefore be to unpack, engage, and challenge these limits. Drawing on the work of Hannah Arendt, the book offers a close reading of the technology-biopolitics-complex that informs and produces contemporary subjectivities, highlighting the perilous implications this has for how we think about the ethics of political violence, both now and in the future.

De Gaulle, Israel and the Jews

De Gaulle, Israel and the Jews
Raymond Aron, "De Gaulle, Israel and the Jews"
English | ISBN: 113852199X | 2017 | 160 pages | EPUB | 522 KB
The lives of Raymond Aron and Charles de Gaulle intersected at significant moments in twentieth-century history, though they differed on many issues during World War II and over the subsequent decades. Aron, for example, distinguished between the attitude and responsibility of the Vichy government and the French Nazi collaborators in Paris, unlike de Gaulle, who regarded anyone who obeyed Marshal Petain as a traitor. In the postwar period, Aron differed from de Gaulle on a number of issues, including Algeria. But the strongest direct criticism by Aron of de Gaulle's language and policy resulted after a 1967 press conference, where he referred to Jews as "an elite people, self-assured and domineering."

Glenn Tucker, "Dawn Like Thunder "
English | ISBN: 1090869436 | 2019 | 474 pages | EPUB | 1161 KB
In the early 1800s, American ships off the coast of North Africa routinely found themselves the targets of Muslim pirates. These sea raiders, or 'corsairs' as they were known, sought captives to enslave in the Ottoman Empire's galleys, mines and harems. When reports circulated of white Christians being shackled to oars, smashing rocks in mines and being sold into sexual slavery, the American public became incensed. The leaders of the young republic were forced to act and with remarkable dexterity built a fleet of ships that grew into a fighting force powerful enough to withstand its first major test: The Barbary Wars.
