Art Effects Image, Agency, and Ritual in Amazonia

Art Effects Image, Agency, and Ritual in Amazonia
Art Effects: Image, Agency, and Ritual in Amazonia By Carlos Fausto, David Rodgers
2020 | 420 Pages | ISBN: 1496220447 | PDF | 36 MB
InArt Effects Carlos Fausto explores the interplay between indigenous material culture and ontology in ritual contexts, interpreting the agency of artifacts and indigenous presences and addressing major themes in anthropological theory and art history to study ritual images in the widest sense. Fausto delves into analyses of the body, aerophones, ritual masks, and anthropomorphic effigies while making a broad comparison between Amerindian visual regimes and the Christian imagistic tradition. Drawing on his extensive fieldwork in Amazonia, Fausto offers a rich tapestry of inductive theorizing in understanding anthropology's most complex subjects of analysis, such as praxis and materiality, ontology and belief, the power of images and mimesis, anthropomorphism and zoomorphism, and animism and posthumanism. Art Effects also brims with suggestive, hemispheric comparisons of South American and North American indigenous masks. In this tantalizing interdisciplinary work with echoes of Franz Boas, Pierre Clastres, and Claude Lévi-Strauss, among others, Fausto asks: how do objects and ritual images acquire their efficacy and affect human beings?

Alphabet Scribes in the Land of Cuneiform S piru Professionals in Mesopotamia in the Neo-Babylonian and Achaemenid Peri

Alphabet Scribes in the Land of Cuneiform S piru Professionals in Mesopotamia in the Neo-Babylonian and Achaemenid Peri
Yigal Bloch, "Alphabet Scribes in the Land of Cuneiform: S piru Professionals in Mesopotamia in the Neo-Babylonian and Achaemenid Peri"
English | ISBN: 1463206356 | 2018 | 515 pages | PDF | 6 MB
This book discusses the alphabetic scribes (s piru) mentioned in Mesopotamian documents of the Neo-Babylonian and Achaemenid periods specifically, of the 6th-5th centuries bce. The period in question saw a wide diffusion of writing in the Northwest Semitic alphabetic script mostly in Aramaic in Mesopotamia; yet, alphabetic texts were normally written in ink on perishable materials and did not survive to be discovered by modern archaeologists. In contrast, cuneiform tablets written on clay have been found in large numbers, and they document different aspects of the alphabetic scribes activities. This book presents evidence for understanding the Akkadian term s piru as a designation for an alphabetic scribe and discusses the functions of these professionals in different administrative and economic spheres. It further considers the question of the ethnic origins of the alphabetic scribes in Mesopotamia, with special attention to the participation of Judeans in Babylonia in this profession. Bloch also provides translations of over 100 cuneiform documents of economic, legal and administrative content.

Afro-Cuban Religions

Afro-Cuban Religions
Afro-Cuban Religions By Miguel Barnet
2001 | 180 Pages | ISBN: 9766370540 | PDF | 14 MB
African-derived religions enrich all aspects of Cuba's social, cultural, and everyday life, and encompass all ethnic and social groups. Politics, art, and civil events such as weddings, funerals, festivals, and carnivals all possess distinctly Afro-Cuban characteristics. Miguel Barnet provides a concise guide to the various traditions and branches of Afro-Cuban religions. He distinguishes between the two most important cult forms-the Regla de Ocha (Santeria) and the Regla de Palo Monte. Regla de Ocha promotes worship of the Orisha (gods), and uses traditional oracles that originated in the old Yoruba city of Ile-Ife. The Regla de Palo Monte came from the Congo area. The term palo refers to the ritual use of trees and plants, whiten are believed to have magical powers.Africans who were brought to Cuba as slaves had to recreate their old traditions in their new Caribbean context. As their African heritage collided with Catholicism and with Native American and European traditions, certain African gods and traditions became more prominent while others lost their significance in the new Cuban culture. The author also discusses the roles of music and dance as forms of Cuban religious expression and describes the specific instruments and symbols they employ. The book ends with an enthusiastic depiction of Barnet's recent research journey to West Africa, the Land of the Orishas.MIGUEL BARNET, director of the Fernando Ortiz Foundation in Havana, is the author of Biography of a Runaway Slave and numerous other books, which have been translated into several languages.
