At the close of the twentieth century, black artists began to figure prominently in the mainstream American art world for the first time. Thanks to the social advances of the civil rights movement and the rise of multiculturalism, African American artists in the late 1980s and early '90s enjoyed unprecedented access to established institutions of publicity and display. Yet in this moment of ostensible freedom, black cultural practitioners found themselves turning to the history of slavery.

Border-Crossing and Comedy at the Théâtre Italien, 1716-1723

Border-Crossing and Comedy at the Théâtre Italien, 1716-1723
Border-Crossing and Comedy at the Théâtre Italien, 1716-1723 By Matthew J. McMahan
2021 | 279 Pages | ISBN: 3030700704 | PDF | 5 MB
How do nationalized stereotypes inform the reception and content of the migrant comedian's work? How do performers adapt? What gets lost (and found) in translation?Border-Crossing and Comedy at the Théâtre Italien, 1716-1723explores these questions in an early modern context. When a troupe of commedia dell'arte actors were invited by the French crown to establish a theatre in Paris, they found their transition was anything but easy. They had to learn a new language and adjust to French expectations and demands. This study presents their story as a dynamic model of coping with the challenges of migration, whereby the actors made their transnational identity a central focus of their comedy. Relating their work to popular twenty-first century comedians, this book also discusses the tools and ideas that contextualize the border-crossing comedian's work―including diplomacy, translation, improvisation, and parody―across time.

Bodies In Technology (Volume 5) (Electronic Mediations)

Bodies In Technology (Volume 5) (Electronic Mediations)
Bodies In Technology (Volume 5) (Electronic Mediations) By Don Ihde
2001 | 180 Pages | ISBN: 0816638462 | PDF | 23 MB
New technologies suggest new ideas about embodiment: our "reach" extends to global sites through the Internet; we enter cyberspace through the engines of virtual reality. In this book, a leading philosopher of technology explores the meaning of bodies in technology-how the sense of our bodies and of our orientation in the world is affected by the various information technologies. Bodies in Technology begins with an analysis of embodiment in cyberspace, then moves on to consider ways in which social theorists have interpreted or overlooked these conditions. An astute and sensible judge of these theories, Don Ihde is a uniquely provocative and helpful guide through contemporary thinking about technology and embodiment, drawing on sources and examples as various as video games, popular films, the workings of e-mail, and virtual reality techniques. Charting the historical, philosophical, and practical territory between virtual reality and real life, this work is an important contribution to the national conversation on the impact technology-and information technology in particular-has on our lives in a wired, global age. Don Ihde is distinguished professor in the Department of Philosophy, and is also affiliated with the history of science and women's studies programs, at SUNY, Stony Brook. Electronic Mediations Series, volume 5
