Sonic Overload Alfred Schnittke, Valentin Silvestrov, and Polystylism in the Late USSR

Sonic Overload Alfred Schnittke, Valentin Silvestrov, and Polystylism in the Late USSR
Sonic Overload: Alfred Schnittke, Valentin Silvestrov, and Polystylism in the Late USSR By Peter J. Schmelz
2020 | 430 Pages | ISBN: 0197541259 | PDF | 10 MB
Sonic Overload offers a new, music-centered cultural history of the late Soviet Union. It focuses on polystylism in music as a response to the information overload swamping listeners in the Soviet Union during its final decades. It traces the ways in which leading composers Alfred Schnittkeand Valentin Silvestrov initially embraced popular sources before ultimately rejecting them. Polystylism first responded to the utopian impulses of Soviet ideology with utopian impulses to encompass all musical styles, from "high" to "low". But these initial all-embracing aspirations were soonfollowed by retreats to alternate utopias founded on carefully selecting satisfactory borrowings, as familiar hierarchies of culture, taste, and class reasserted themselves. Looking at polystylism in the late USSR tells us about past and present, near and far, as it probes the musical roots of theoverloaded, distracted present.ÂBased on archival research, oral historical interviews, and other overlooked primary materials, as well as close listening and thorough examination of scores and recordings, Sonic Overload presents a multilayered and comprehensive portrait of late-Soviet polystylism and cultural life, and of themusic of Silvestrov and Schnittke. Sonic Overload is intended for musicologists and Soviet, Russian, and Ukrainian specialists in history, the arts, film, and literature, as well as readers interested in twentieth- and twenty-first century music; modernism and postmodernism; quotation and collage;the intersections of "high" and "low" cultures; and politics and the arts.

Solid State NMR Principles, Methods, and Applications

Solid State NMR Principles, Methods, and Applications
Solid State NMR: Principles, Methods, and Applications By Klaus Müller; Marco Geppi
2021 | 560 Pages | ISBN: 352731816X | PDF | 13 MB
Solid State NMR A thorough and comprehensive textbook covering the theoretical background, experimental approaches, and major applications of solid-state NMR spectroscopy Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a powerful non-destructive technique capable of providing information about the molecular structure and dynamics of molecules. Alongside solution-state NMR, a well-established technique to study chemical structures and investigate physico-chemical properties of molecules in solutions, solid-state NMR (SSNMR) offers many exciting possibilities for the analysis of solid and soft materials across scientific fields. SSNMR shows unique capabilities for a detailed investigation of structural and dynamic properties of materials over wide space and time ranges. For this reason, and thanks to significant advances in the past several years, the application of SSNMR to materials is rapidly increasing in disciplines such as chemistry, physics, and materials and life sciences. Solid State NMR: Principles, Methods, and Applications offers a systematic introduction to the theory, methodological concepts, and major experimental methods of SSMR spectroscopy. Exploring the unique potential of SSNMR for the structural and dynamic characterization of soft and either amorphous or crystalline solid materials, this comprehensive textbook provides foundational knowledge and recent developments of SSNMR, covering physical and theoretical background, experimental methods, and applications to pharmaceuticals, polymers, inorganic and hybrid materials, liquid crystals, and model membranes. Written by two expert authors to ensure a clear and consistent presentation of the subject, this textbook: Includes a brief introduction to the historical aspects and broad theoretical background of solid-state NMR spectroscopy Provides helpful illustrations to explain the various SSNMR concepts and methods Features accessible descriptive text with self-consistent use of quantum mechanics Covers the experimental aspects of SSNMR spectroscopy and in particular a description of many useful pulse sequences Contains references to relevant literature Solid State NMR: Principles, Methods, and Applications is the ideal textbook for university courses on SSNMR, advanced spectroscopies, and a valuable single-volume reference for spectroscopists, chemists, and researchers in the field of materials.

Sociology in Greece Its History and Development

Sociology in Greece Its History and Development
Sociology in Greece: Its History and Development
English | 2022 | ISBN: 3031161890 | 205 Pages | PDF (True) | 5 MB
This Palgrave Pivot provides a concise history of the development of sociology in Greece. It provides a compelling narrative of the discipline's embryonic state, its promising beginnings that aligned with its contact with the then robust French and German accomplishments in sociology. It continues with sociology's entanglement with modern Greece's turbulent history during the Civil War and the junta years. It charts Greece's gradual recovery during the mid-1970s, which led to sociology's institutionalization. Yet such institutional boom was not free of politicization processes, many of which proved residual and resilient, stemming from the dictatorship years, as well as from Greece's dependency during its process of modernization. This book completes this historical account by reconsidering sociology's gradual embrace of a multi-paradigmatic orientation, its opportunities in light of the burgeoning Greek EU membership and extroversion. It concludes with charting sociology's position in the 21st century, facing challenges like the Great Recession and its impact in Greece as well as the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sharing the Light Representations of Women and Virtue in Early China

Sharing the Light Representations of Women and Virtue in Early China
Sharing the Light: Representations of Women and Virtue in Early China By Lisa Ann Raphals
1998 | 348 Pages | ISBN: 0791438554 | PDF | 20 MB
Explores historical and philosophical shifts in the depiction of women and virtue in the early years of the Chinese state. Includes an examination of the history of yin-yang theories. Sharing the Light explores historical and philosophical shifts in the depiction of women and virtue in the early centuries of the Chinese state. These changes had far-reaching effects on both the treatment of women in Chinese society and on the formation of Chinese philosophical discourse on ethics, cosmology, epistemology, and self-cultivation. Warring States and Han dynasty narratives frequently represented women as intellectually adroit, politically astute, and ethically virtuous; these histories, discourses, and life stories portray women as active participants within their own society, not inert victims of it. The women depicted resembled sages, ministers, and generals as the mainstays and destroyers of dynasties. These stories emphasized that sagacity, intellect, strategy, and statecraft were virtues proper to women, an emphasis that effectively disappeared from later collections and instruction texts by and for women. During the same period, there were also important changes in the understanding of two polarities that delineated what now is called gender. Han correlative cosmology included a range of hierarchical analogies between yin and yang and men and women, and the understanding of yin and yang shifted from complementarity toward hierarchy. Similarly, the doctrine of separate spheres (inner and outer, nei-wai) shifted from a notion of appropriate distinction between men and women toward physical, social, and intellectual separation and isolation.
