The Sicilian Vespers A History of the Mediterranean World in the Later Thirteenth Century

The Sicilian Vespers A History of the Mediterranean World in the Later Thirteenth Century
Steven Runciman, "The Sicilian Vespers: A History of the Mediterranean World in the Later Thirteenth Century"
English | 1992 | ISBN: 0521437741 | 368 pages | PDF | 8.9 MB
On 30 March 1282, as the bells of Palermo were ringing for Vespers, the Sicilian townsfolk, crying 'Death to the French', slaughtered the garrison and administration of their Angevin King. Seen in historical perspective it was not an especially big massacre: the revolt of the long-subjugated Sicilians might seem just another resistance movement. But the events of 1282 came at a crucial moment. Steven Runciman takes the Vespers as the climax of a great narrative sweep covering the whole of the Mediterranean in the thirteenth century. His sustained narrative power is displayed here with concentrated brilliance in the rise and fall of this fascinating episode. This is also an excellent guide to the historical background to Dante's Divine Comedy, forming almost a Who's Who of the political figures in it, and providing insight into their placement in Hell, Paradise or Purgatory.

The Return of Jazz Joachim-Ernst Berendt and West German Cultural Change

The Return of Jazz Joachim-Ernst Berendt and West German Cultural Change
The Return of Jazz: Joachim-Ernst Berendt and West German Cultural Change By Andrew Wright Hurley
2009 | 322 Pages | ISBN: 1845455665 | PDF | 3 MB
Jazz has had a peculiar and fascinating history in Germany. The influential but controversial German writer, broadcaster, and record producer, Joachim-Ernst Berendt (1922-2000), author of the world's best-selling jazz book, labored to legitimize jazz in West Germany after its ideological renunciation during the Nazi era. German musicians began, in a highly productive way, to question their all-too-eager adoption of American culture and how they sought to make valid artistic statements reflecting their identity as Europeans. This book explores the significance of some of Berendt's most important writings and record productions. Particular attention is given to the "Jazz Meets the World" encounters that he engineered with musicians from Japan, Tunisia, Brazil, Indonesia, and India. This proto-"world music" demonstrates how some West Germans went about creating a post-nationalist identity after the Third Reich. Berendt's powerful role as the West German "Jazz Pope" is explored, as is the groundswell of criticism directed at him in the wake of 1968.

English | ISBN: 1501367773 | 2021 | 304 pages | PDF | 5 MB
The music business is a multifaceted, transnational industry that operates within complex and rapidly changing political, economic, cultural and technological contexts. The mode and manner of how music is created, obtained, consumed and exploited is evolving rapidly. It is based on relationships that can be both complimentary and at times confrontational, and around roles that interact, overlap and sometimes merge, reflecting the competing and coinciding interests of creative artists and music industry professionals. It falls to music law and legal practice to provide the underpinning framework to enable these complex relationships to flourish, to provide a means to resolve disputes, and to facilitate commerce in a challenging and dynamic business environment.

The Nation's Tortured Body Violence, Representation, and the Formation of a Sikh Diaspora

The Nation's Tortured Body Violence, Representation, and the Formation of a Sikh Diaspora
Brian Keith Axel, "The Nation's Tortured Body: Violence, Representation, and the Formation of a Sikh "Diaspora""
English | 2001 | ISBN: 0822326078, 0822326159 | PDF | pages: 311 | 21.0 mb
In The Nation's Tortured Body Brian Keith Axel explores the formation of the Sikh diaspora and, in so doing, offers a powerful inquiry into conditions of peoplehood, colonialism, and postcoloniality. Demonstrating a new direction for historical anthropology, he focuses on the position of violence between 1849 and 1998 in the emergence of a transnational fight for Khalistan (an independent Sikh state). Axel argues that, rather than the homeland creating the diaspora, it has been the diaspora, or histories of displacement, that have created particular kinds of places-homelands.
