Spatial Cultures Towards a New Social Morphology of Cities Past and Present

Spatial Cultures Towards a New Social Morphology of Cities Past and Present
Sam Griffiths, Alexander von Lünen, "Spatial Cultures: Towards a New Social Morphology of Cities Past and Present"
English | 2016 | ISBN: 1472450299 | PDF | pages: 314 | 35.5 mb
What is the relationship between how cities work and what cities mean? Spatial Cultures: Towards a New Social Morphology of Cities Past and Present announces an innovative research agenda for urban studies in which themes and methods from urban history, social theory and built environment research are brought into dialogue across disciplinary and chronological boundaries. The collection confronts the recurrent epistemological impasse that arises between research focussing on the description of material built environments and that which is concerned primarily with the people who inhabit, govern and write about cities past and present. A reluctance to engage substantively with this issue has been detrimental to scholarly efforts to understand the urban built environment as a meaningful agent of human social experience. Drawing on a wide range of historical and contemporary urban case studies, as well as a selection of theoretical and methodological reflections, the contributions to this volume seek to historically, geographically and architecturally contextualize diverse spatial practices including movement, encounter, play, procession and neighbourhood. The aim is to challenge their tacit treatment as universal categories in much writing on cities and to propose alternative research possibilities with implications as much for urban design thinking as for history and the social sciences.

Sound-Politics in São Paulo

Sound-Politics in São Paulo
Leonardo Cardoso, "Sound-Politics in São Paulo "
English | ISBN: 0190660090 | 2019 | 266 pages | PDF | 9 MB
How does the state separate music from noise? How can such a filtering apparatus shape the content and form of sound production in the city? As a marker of co-presence to the hearing body, sound is always open to (or rather opens up) the politics of shared existence. In the throes of the post-dictatorship period, Brazil's legislative and executive branches implemented a series of sweeping measures to address quality of life concerns, including environmental pollution and urban inequality. In São Paulo, noise control became a recurrent controversy, growing in size and scale between the 1990s and 2010s. Together with the much-debated fear of crime and the socioeconomic and cultural tensions between the rich urban center and the poor peripheries, such ecological agendas against noise as a harmful pollutant have reconfigured the presence of environmental sounds in the city. In this book, Cardoso argues that the framing of specific sounds as unavoidable, unnecessary, or as harmful

Soft Skills Deliverring Hard Numbers

Soft Skills Deliverring Hard Numbers
Soft Skills Deliverring Hard Numbers by Steve Farmer
English | 2022 | ISBN: N/A | ASIN: B0BH4WXHW2 | 225 pages | EPUB | 2.68 Mb
The modern leadership challenge is how to enable your people to be the best that they can be. People no longer work just to pay the gas bill, they want interesting and engaging activity, they want to feel like they are making a difference and it is important to them that the vision and values of the organisation are in congruence with their own. This book is an ideal guide for leaders in the modern workplace who want to understand what engages, motivates and influences people to be their very best. It encourages the reader to understand the whole person from a mental and physical health perspective and looks at some of the modern challenges in our lives that complicate the traditional views of 9am to 5pm responsibility where employees were expected to leave their personal lives at the door. Organisations that truly understand employee engagement and harness softer leadership skills significantly outperform the companies that concentrate purely on the hard numbers. A softer approach to delivering hard numbers is a truly sustainable approach to longer term success.

Sixteenth-Century Readers, Fifteenth-Century Books Continuities of Reading in the English Reformation

Sixteenth-Century Readers, Fifteenth-Century Books Continuities of Reading in the English Reformation
Margaret Connolly, "Sixteenth-Century Readers, Fifteenth-Century Books: Continuities of Reading in the English Reformation "
English | ISBN: 1108426778 | 2019 | 330 pages | PDF | 9 MB
This innovative study investigates the reception of medieval manuscripts over a long century, 1470-1585, spanning the reigns of Edward IV to Elizabeth I. Members of the Tudor gentry family who owned these manuscripts had properties in Willesden and professional affiliations in London. These men marked the leaves of their books with signs of use, allowing their engagement with the texts contained there to be reconstructed. Through detailed research, Margaret Connolly reveals the various uses of these old books: as a repository for family records; as a place to preserve other texts of a favourite or important nature; as a source of practical information for the household; and as a professional manual for the practising lawyer. Investigation of these family-owned books reveals an unexpectedly strong interest in works of the past, and the continuing intellectual and domestic importance of medieval manuscripts in an age of print.

Jeffrey Stuart Kerr, "Seat of Empire: The Embattled Birth of Austin, Texas "
English | ISBN: 0896729745 | 2016 | 304 pages | EPUB | 4 MB
The founding of Austin sparked one of the Republic of Texas's first great political battles, pitting against each other two Texas titans: Lamar, who in less than a year had risen to vice president from army private, and Sam Houston, the hero of San Jacinto and a man both loved and hated throughout the Republic. The shy, soft-spoken, self-righteous Lamar dreamed of a great imperial capital in the wilderness, but to achieve it faced the hardships of the frontier, the mighty Comanche nation, the Mexican army, and the formidable Houston's political clout.
