Gruesome Looking Objects A New History of Lynching and Everyday Things

Gruesome Looking Objects A New History of Lynching and Everyday Things
Gruesome Looking Objects: A New History of Lynching and Everyday Things
English | 2023 | ISBN: 1316514021 | 257 Pages | PDF | 6 MB
The 1898 lynching of Tom Johnson and Joe Kizer is retold in this groundbreaking book. Unlike other histories of lynching that rely on conventional historical records, this study focuses on the objects associated with the lynching, including newspaper articles, fragments of the victims' clothing, photographs, and souvenirs such as sticks from the hanging tree. This material culture approach uncovers how people tried to integrate the meaning of the lynching into their everyday lives through objects. These seemingly ordinary items are repositories for the comprehension, interpretation, and commemoration of racial violence and white supremacy. Elijah Gaddis showcases an approach to objects as materials of history and memory, insisting that we live in a world suffused with the material traces of racial violence, past and present.

Globetrotting African American Athletes and Cold War Politics

Globetrotting African American Athletes and Cold War Politics
Damion L. Thomas, "Globetrotting: African American Athletes and Cold War Politics"
English | 2017 | ISBN: 025208263X, 0252037170 | PDF | pages: 231 | 4.0 mb
Throughout the Cold War, the Soviet Union deplored the treatment of African Americans by the U.S. government as proof of hypocrisy in the American promises of freedom and equality. This probing history examines government attempts to manipulate international perceptions of U.S. race relations during the Cold War by sending African American athletes abroad on goodwill tours and in international competitions as cultural ambassadors and visible symbols of American values. Damion L. Thomas follows the State Department's efforts from 1945 to 1968 to showcase prosperous African American athletes including Jackie Robinson, Jesse Owens, and the Harlem Globetrotters as the preeminent citizens of the African Diaspora rather than as victims of racial oppression. With athletes in baseball, track and field, and basketball, the government relied on figures whose fame carried the desired message to countries where English was little understood. However, eventually African American athletes began to provide counter-narratives to State Department claims of American exceptionalism, most notably with Tommie Smith and John Carlos's famous black power salute at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.

Getting Started in Quantum Optics

Getting Started in Quantum Optics
Getting Started in Quantum Optics
English | 2022 | ISBN: 3031124316 | 220 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 24 MB
This book, based on classroom-tested lecture notes, provides a self-contained one semester undergraduate course on quantum optics, accessible to students (and other readers) who have completed an introductory quantum mechanics course and are familiar with Dirac notation and the concept of entanglement. The book covers canonical quantization, the harmonic oscillator, vacuum fluctuations, Fock states, the single photon state, quantum optical treatment of the beam splitter and the interferometer, multimode quantized light, and coherent and incoherent states. Metrology is a particular area of emphasis, with the book culminating in a treatment of squeezed light and its use in the laser interferometer gravitational-wave observatory (LIGO). The Heisenberg limit is described, along with NOON states and their application in super-sensitivity, super-resolution and quantum lithography. Applications of entanglement and coincidence measurements are described including ghost imaging, quantum illumination, absolute photodetector calibration, and interaction-free measurement. With quantum optics playing a central role in the so-called "second quantum revolution," this book, equipped with plenty of exercises and worked examples, will leave students well prepared to enter graduate study or industry.

Genetic Algorithms + Data Structures = Evolution Programs, Second, Extended Edition

Genetic Algorithms + Data Structures = Evolution Programs, Second, Extended Edition
Genetic Algorithms + Data Structures = Evolution Programs, Second, Extended Edition by Zbigniew Michalewicz
English | PDF | 1994 | 345 Pages | ISBN : N/a | 28.2 MB
Genetic algorithms are founded upon the principle of evolution, i.e., survival of the fittest. Hence evolution programming techniques, based on genetic algorithms, are applicable to many hard optimization problems, such as optimization of functions with linear and nonlinear constraints, the traveling salesman problem, and problems of scheduling, partitioning, and control. The importance of these techniques has been growing in the last decade, since evolution programs are parallel in nature, and parallelism is one of the most promising directions in computer science.
