Imaginative Mapping Landscape and Japanese Identity in the Tokugawa and Meiji Eras

Imaginative Mapping Landscape and Japanese Identity in the Tokugawa and Meiji Eras
Imaginative Mapping: Landscape and Japanese Identity in the Tokugawa and Meiji Eras By Nobuko Toyosawa
2019 | 322 Pages | ISBN: 0674241126 | PDF | 5 MB
Landscape has always played a vital role in shaping Japan's cultural identity. Imaginative Mapping analyzes how intellectuals of the Tokugawa and Meiji eras used specific features and aspects of the landscape to represent their idea of Japan and produce a narrative of Japan as a cultural community. These scholars saw landscapes as repositories of local history and identity, stressing Japan's differences from the models of China and the West.By detailing the continuities and ruptures between a sense of shared cultural community that emerged in the seventeenth century and the modern nation state of the late nineteenth century, this study sheds new light on the significance of early modernity, one defined not by temporal order but rather by spatial diffusion of the concept of Japan. More precisely, Nobuko Toyosawa argues that the circulation of guidebooks and other spatial narratives not only promoted further movement but also contributed to the formation of subjectivity by allowing readers to imagine the broader conceptual space of Japan. The recurring claims to the landscape are evidence that it was the medium for the construction of Japan as a unified cultural body.

Ideology and Inquisition The World of the Censors in Early Mexico
Martin Austin Nesvig, "Ideology and Inquisition: The World of the Censors in Early Mexico"
English | 2009 | ISBN: 0300140401 | PDF | pages: 380 | 2.6 mb
This book is the first comprehensive treatment in English of the ideology and practice of the Inquisitional censors, focusing on the case of Mexico from the 1520s to the 1630s. Others have examined the effects of censorship, but Martin Nesvig employs a nontraditional approach that focuses on the inner logic of censorship in order to examine the collective mentality, ideological formation, and practical application of ideology of the censors themselves.

The volume addresses important questions on professional competence, group membership, (sometimes competing) expectations, and identity boundaries. The chapters establish that identity struggles are a reflection of issues of knowledge, competing norms and attempts for social change.

IO Consolidation in the Data Center A Complete Guide to Data Center Ethernet and Fibre Channel Over Ethernet

IO Consolidation in the Data Center A Complete Guide to Data Center Ethernet and Fibre Channel Over Ethernet
Silvano Gai, "I/O Consolidation in the Data Center: A Complete Guide to Data Center Ethernet and Fibre Channel Over Ethernet"
English | 2009 | pages: 168 | ISBN: 158705888X | PDF | 3,6 mb
Using Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) and related technologies, data centers can consolidate data traffic onto a single network switch, simplifying their environments, promoting virtualization, and substantially reducing power and cooling costs. This emerging technology is drawing immense excitement, but few enterprise IT decision-makers and implementers truly understand it. I/O Consolidation in the Data Center is the only complete, up-to-date guide to FCoE. FCoE innovators Silvano Gai and Claudio DeSanti (chair of the T11 FCoE standards working group) systematically explain the technology: its benefits, tradeoffs, and what it will take to implement it successfully in production environments. Unlike most other discussions of FCoE, this book fully reflects the final, recently-approved industry standard. The authors also present five detailed case studies illustrating typical FCoE adoption scenarios, as well as an extensive Q and A section addressing the issues enterprise IT professionals raise most often. This is a fully updated version of Silvano Gai's privately-published book on FCoE, written for leading FCoE pioneer Nuova Systems before the company was acquired by Cisco. Nearly 12,000 copies of that book have already been distributed, demonstrating the immense interest in FCoE technology, and the scarcity of reliable information that has existed about it.
