Statistical Modeling With R a dual frequentist and Bayesian approach for life scientists

Statistical Modeling With R a dual frequentist and Bayesian approach for life scientists
English | 2023 | ISBN: 978-0192859020 | 519 pages | True PDF | 35.98 MB
To date, statistics has tended to be neatly divided into two theoretical approaches or frameworks: frequentist (or classical) and Bayesian. Scientists typically choose the statistical framework to analyse their data depending on the nature and complexity of the problem, and based on their personal views and prior training on probability and uncertainty. Although textbooks and courses should reflect and anticipate this dual reality, they rarely do so. This accessible textbook explains, discusses, and applies both the frequentist and Bayesian theoretical frameworks to fit the different types of statistical models that allow an analysis of the types of data most commonly gathered by life scientists. It presents the material in an informal, approachable, and progressive manner suitable for readers with only a basic knowledge of calculus and statistics.
Statistical Modeling with R is aimed at senior undergraduate and graduate students, professional researchers, and practitioners throughout the life sciences, seeking to strengthen their understanding of quantitative methods and to apply them successfully to real world scenarios, whether in the fields of ecology, evolution, environmental studies, or computational biology.

Spheres of Meaning

Spheres of Meaning
English | 2022 | ISBN: 978-1685073350 | 346 pages | True PDF | 8.37 MB
"The present volume spreads the wings of the meaning system and describes the activation of meaning in real-life domains, as it were. After introducing the major theoretical tenets and assessment procedures, the book focuses on the role of meaning in thebasic domains of education, health, society, and communication, prior to venturing into the enticing domains of culture, art, reality experiencing and consciousness. Each chapter presents a new perspective on the discussed issues, which is meaning-based and strives to be meaningful. In view of the innovations involved in the theory and methodology of the meaning system, here are a few suggestions designed to facilitate the readers' handling of the book. The major suggestion is to start with chapters 1 and 2 or at least not to skip them, because chapter 1 presents the basics of the theory and chapter 2 describes the essentials of the methodology. Chapter 1 includes Table 1 which describes in detail the main variables of the meaning system, in the form of definitions accompanied by examples and the notations assigned to each variable. This table is of great importance in helping the novice reader. It is to be consulted whenever any misunderstanding crops up in the course of reading the book. An abbreviatedversion of this table is presented on the inner cover of the book for swift consultation of names and numbers of variables. The reader is also advised to consult - whenever necessary - the short list of definitions of the major constructs and terms of the meaning system appended to chapter 2. For learning the coding of the meaning system, the suggestion is to read chapter 2, which suffices for understanding the meaning system and the studies. For practice in regard to coding, it is suggested to turn to the website (Kreitlermeaningsystem) which may be used free of charge and includes also manuals and guidance for coding of meaning materials. All the chapters of the book following chapters 1 and 2 deal with specific domains - education, health, society, communication, culture, art, the experiencing of reality and consciousness. Each chapter describes the approach, and application of meaning to the particular issue of the specific domain, presenting new problems or new perspectives in regard to old problems, all based on empirical studies of meaning. The chapters are preceded by abstracts that may inform the reader about the content of the chapter. Each chapter is independent of the others and may be read and enjoyed by itself, as well as studied and used without any reliance on the other chapters. There is no necessity to follow the presented order of the chapters 3-10. It is hoped that the book Spheres of Meaning will help meaning to emerge from its state of invisibility long enough and impressively enough to evoke the attention of those who did not look that way habitually, and to convince the disbelievers that meaning is alive and active and very functional. The time seems ripe for learning about the properties of meaning and of embedding it in the regular set of practical tools designed to benefit science and carry a meaningful message for everyone. Hopefully the newcomers and those who are already familiar with Meaning, will be inspired by the present volume to uncover new possibilities and yet unexplored domains for the advancement of science, meaning, and meaningfulness of life"--
