Extinct & Endangered Insects in Peril

Extinct & Endangered Insects in Peril
English | 2022 | ISBN: 1419759639 | 144 pages | True EPUB | 62.76 MB
Extraordinary images by master macro photographer Levon Biss capture a vanishing world of insects from the collections of the American Museum of Natural History in New York
Insects are at once our most familiar fellow animals and the most mysterious. They appear to be indestructible, but globally, insect species are quietly disappearing in the sixth mass extinction that life on Earth is undergoing today. This joint project of photographer Levon Biss and the American Museum of Natural History contains indelible images of 40 extinct or endangered species in the museum's collection, selected from its vast holdings by a team of scientists. They range from imperiled old friends like the monarch butterfly and the nine-spotted ladybug to the remote Lord Howe Island stick insect of Australia, thought to be extinct for most of the 20th century until a tiny population was discovered and bred in captivity in 2001. All were sent to Biss's studio, where he created commanding portraits that can be enlarged 300-times lifesize to reveal vivid full-page details of form and color—a world invisible to our naked eyes. The result is a book that insists on the momentous significance of these small, mostly unknown creatures.

Do snakes and salamanders fascinate you or make you squeamish? Have you ever listened closely to the birds chirping in your neighborhood? Can you identify the flowers growing in Philadelphia's urban parks? (Moreover, are the mushrooms safe to eat?) Exploring Philly Nature is amateur naturalist, urban herper,* and Grid contributor Bernard Brown's handy guide to experiencing the flora and fauna in Philly.
This compact illustrated volume contains 52 activities from birding, (squirrel) fishing, and basement bug-hunting to joining a frog call survey and visiting a mussel hatchery. Brown encourages kids (as well as their parents) to connect with the natural world close to home. Each entry contains information on where and when to participate, what you will need (even if it is only patience), and tips on clubs and organizations to contact for access.

Exploring Modeling with Data and Differential Equations Using R

Exploring Modeling with Data and Differential Equations Using R
English | 2022 | ISBN: 978-1032259482 | 379 pages | True PDF | 8.5 MB
Exploring Modeling with Data and Differential Equations Using R provides a unique introduction to differential equations with applications to the biological and other natural sciences. Additionally, model parameterization and simulation of stochastic differential equations are explored, providing additional tools for model analysis and evaluation. This unified framework sits "at the intersection" of different mathematical subject areas, data science, statistics, and the natural sciences. The text throughout emphasizes data science workflows using the R statistical software program and the tidyverse constellation of packages. Only knowledge of calculus is needed; the text's integrated framework is a stepping stone for further advanced study in mathematics or as a comprehensive introduction to modeling for quantitative natural scientists.
The text will introduce you to:

Explicit Symmetry Breaking in Electrodynamic Systems and Electromagnetic Radiation, 2nd Edition

Explicit Symmetry Breaking in Electrodynamic Systems and Electromagnetic Radiation, 2nd Edition
English | 2022 | ISBN: 978-0750351300 | 104 pages | True PDF EPUB | 25.28 MB
The book aims to unravel some of the nature's mysteries by correlating the nature of fields and the transformations in their symmetries. It begins with a brief background on the foundation of symmetry and its meaning in fields such as architecture, mathematics, and physics. A special focus of the book is on the concept of symmetries in electromagnetism and explicit symmetry breaking which generates radiation. Despite extensive developments of the phenomenon of broken symmetry in different domains of physics, it has yet to be applied within the context of classical electromagnetism and related engineering applications in a broader context. For example, the mechanism of generation of electromagnetic radiation from thin films and non-metallic materials at radio frequencies remains poorly understood and the book offers a lucid exposition to it.
This second edition builds on the introduction to the concept of symmetries in electromagnetism and explicit symmetry breaking. It addresses some of the recent developments in the field of radiation from magneto-electric materials and ferroelectric materials and correlates them to the nature of symmetries in physical systems. New chapters include coverage of radiation mechanisms from magnetoelectric materials, the role of gauge fields in radiation, and antenna design and symmetries.

Explaining Physics With the Help of Toys

Explaining Physics With the Help of Toys
English | 2022 | ISBN: 9811256004 | 242 pages | True PDF | 11.01 MB
The main task of the initial period of studying physics is inculcating the interest and enthusiasm of children in this subject. The root cause of all interest is surprise, and for children there is almost nothing more surprising than a new and unusual toy. There is a whole class of toys with unusual mechanisms, behaviour, or way of interacting with them. Having explained to the child the not quite ordinary, and often paradoxical, properties of such toys, we can gradually instil in him an interest in physics as one of the most important sciences about the nature of the surrounding world. The main purpose of the book is to arouse interest in the study of physics with the help of toys that everyone has loved since childhood.
The book contains descriptions of the toys in which, with the help of explanations of the devices and principles of operation, the basic physical laws are revealed, together with perspectives of phenomena and patterns, practical significance, as well as historical information. The individual descriptions contain the minimum necessary mathematical calculations as well as information of environmental, statistical, and household orientations. All toys are systematized according to 4 chapters: Mechanics, Liquids and Gases, Electricity, and Optics.

Exoplanets, The Frontier of Modern Astronomy

Exoplanets, The Frontier of Modern Astronomy
English | 2022 | ISBN: 9798201343125 | 132 pages | True EPUB | 6.45 MB
Exoplanets have been found in a relatively small region of our galaxy, the Milky Way. According to NASA's Kepler Space Telescope, there are more planets in the universe than stars.
Our solar system's exoplanets comprise similar elements to our planets, but their mixtures may differ. By measuring the sizes (diameters) and masses (weights) of exoplanets, we can determine their compositions, which range from very rocky (like Earth and Venus) to very gaseous (like Jupiter and Saturn). Some planets may be dominated by water, ice, or iron, while others are dominated by iron or carbon. A stellar world with lava seas, a puffy planet, and a planet whose core is as dense as Styrofoam have been identified.
