Postcolonial Green Environmental Politics and World Narratives

Postcolonial Green Environmental Politics and World Narratives
Postcolonial Green: Environmental Politics and World Narratives By Bonnie Roos (editor), Alex Hunt (editor)
2010 | 320 Pages | ISBN: 0813930006 | PDF | 3 MB
Postcolonial Green brings together scholarship bridging ecocriticism and postcolonialism. Since its inception, ecocriticism has been accused of being inattentive to the complexities that colonialism poses for ideas of nature and environmentalism. Postcolonial discourse, on the other hand, has been so immersed in theoretical questions of nationalism and identity that it has been seen as ignoring environmental or ecological concerns. This collection demonstrates that ecocriticism and postcolonialism must be understood as parallel projects if not facets of the very same project―a struggle for global justice and sustainability. The essays in this collection span the globe, and cover such issues as international environmental policy, land and water rights, food production, poverty, women's rights, indigenous activism, and ecotourism. They consider all manner of texts, from oral tradition to literary fiction to web discourse. Contributors bring postcolonial theory to literary traditions, such as that of the United States, not typically seen in this light, and, conversely, bring ecocriticism to literary traditions, such as those of India and China, that have seen little ecological analysis. Postcolonial Green boasts a global geographical breadth, diversity of critical approach, and increasing relevance to the issues we face on a world stage.ContributorsNeel Ahuja, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill * Pavel Cenkl, Sterling College * Sharae Deckard, University College Dublin * Ursula K. Post-Hellenistic Philosophy A Study in Its Development from the Stoics to Origen

Post-Hellenistic Philosophy A Study in Its Development from the Stoics to Origen
G. R. Boys-Stones, "Post-Hellenistic Philosophy: A Study in Its Development from the Stoics to Origen"
English | 2001 | ISBN: 0198152647, 0198857322 | PDF | pages: 246 | 8.7 mb
This book traces, for the first time, a revolution in philosophy which took place during the early centuries of our era. It reconstructs the philosophical basis of the Stoics' theory that fragments of an ancient and divine wisdom could be reconstructed from mythological traditions, and shows that Platonism was founded on an argument that Plato had himself achieved a full reconstruction of this wisdom, and that subsequent philosophies had only regressed once again in their attempts to "improve" on his achievement.

Political Pluralism and the State Beyond Sovereignty

Political Pluralism and the State Beyond Sovereignty
Marcel Wissenburg, "Political Pluralism and the State: Beyond Sovereignty"
English | 2007 | ISBN: 041546739X, 1138978833 | PDF | pages: 236 | 1.6 mb
The concept of a sovereign nation-state is a central part in many of the debates discussing the salient issues in political science today. Yet the debate on the state is fragmented and while the sub-disciplines within political science address the various possible consequences of different processes, the one thing they all share is uncertainty about the future shape and role of the state.

Policing the Risk Society

Policing the Risk Society
Policing the Risk Society By Richard V. Ericson, Kevin D. Haggerty
1997 | 448 Pages | ISBN: 0802079679 | PDF | 27 MB
The information age has left few of us untouched; individuals and institutions alike have undergone radical transformations in the race to get the most out of new technologies. The police are no exception. Policing the Risk Society introduces us to a shocking new vision of police work in which information gathered by the police with surveillance and data collection technologies is brokered to other institutions. Richard Ericson and Kevin Haggerty contend that the police have become information brokers to institutions, such as insurance companies and health and welfare organizations whose operations are based on a knowledge of risk. These institutions influence the ways in which police officers think and act. A critical review of existing research reveals the need to study police interaction with institutions as well as with individuals. These institutions are part of an emerging 'risk society' where knowledge of risk is used to control danger. The authors examine different aspects of police involvement: the use of surveillance technologies and the collection of data on securities, careers, and different social, ethnic, age, and gender groups. They conclude by looking at how police organizations have been forced to bureaucratize and to continually adapt rules, formats, and technologies of communication to meet external demands for knowledge of risk. With this book, Ericson and Haggerty revolutionize the study of policing and, for the first time, provide concrete evidence of the central tenets of risk society theory. Their work will have a major impact not only on scholars in criminology, social theory, and communications, but on policing as well. Awarded the 1998 Herbert Jacob Book Prize by its Committee of the Law and Society Association, University of Massachusetts.

Pliny's Encyclopedia The Reception of the Natural History

Pliny's Encyclopedia The Reception of the Natural History
Aude Doody, "Pliny's Encyclopedia: The Reception of the Natural History"
English | ISBN: 0521491037 | 2010 | 204 pages | PDF | 1340 KB
The Elder Pliny's Natural History is one of the largest and most extraordinary works to survive from antiquity. It has often been referred to as an encyclopedia, usually without full awareness of what such a characterisation implies. In this book, Dr Doody examines this concept and its applicability to the work, paying far more attention than ever before to the varying ways in which it has been read during the last two thousand years, especially by Francis Bacon and Denis Diderot. This book makes a major contribution not just to the study of the Elder Pliny but to our understanding of the cultural processes of ordering knowledge widespread in the Roman Empire and to the reception of classical literature and ideas.
