Fighting Like the Devil for the Sake of God Protestants, Catholics and the Origins of Violence in Victorian Belfast

Fighting Like the Devil for the Sake of God Protestants, Catholics and the Origins of Violence in Victorian Belfast
Fighting Like the Devil for the Sake of God: Protestants, Catholics and the Origins of Violence in Victorian Belfast By Mark Doyle
2009 | 320 Pages | ISBN: 0719079527 | PDF | 20 MB
This fascinating book about Belfast in the middle of the nineteenth century looks at how and why Ireland's most prosperous and industrialized town began to tear itself apart. This study provides a vivid example of how a society can come apart at the seams - and how it can stay that way for generations. Through a series of steadily escalating riots, working-class Protestants and Catholics forged a tradition of violence that profoundly shaped their own identities and that of the city itself, setting the stage for the bitter conflicts of the next century. Fighting like the Devil for the Sake of God describes that foundational moment, offering a new analysis of Belfast's violence that is rooted in the social lives of those who constructed this bitter rivalry and those who were forced to endure it.This book will be of interest to scholars in the fields of Irish and Modern History. -- .

Fifty Years of Meadow Brook Theatre

Fifty Years of Meadow Brook Theatre
Thom F. Foxlee, Maryann Foxlee, "Fifty Years of Meadow Brook Theatre"
English | 2015 | ISBN: 1467114200 | EPUB | pages: 96 | 19.9 mb
Meadow Brook Theatre (MBT) began in 1966 as part of a strategy to associate professional music and theatre with Oakland University's academic programs. The theater became a reality when John Fernald, an internationally acclaimed director and head of London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, accepted Chancellor D.B. Varner's invitation to establish a resident professional theatre company on the university's campus. In January 1967, the curtain rose; nearly five decades later, MBT remains a key element of Oakland County's cultural fabric. Many famous actors-including William Hurt, Curtis Armstrong, and Cindy Williams-have appeared on its stage.

Field Experiments in Political Science and Public Policy Practical Lessons in Design and Delivery

Field Experiments in Political Science and Public Policy Practical Lessons in Design and Delivery
Peter John, "Field Experiments in Political Science and Public Policy: Practical Lessons in Design and Delivery"
English | 2017 | pages: 222 | ISBN: 1138776831 | PDF | 1,5 mb
Field experiments - randomized controlled trials - have become ever more popular in political science, as well as in other disciplines, such as economics, social policy and development. Policy-makers have also increasingly used randomization to evaluate public policies, designing trials of tax reminders, welfare policies and international aid programs to name just a few of the interventions tested in this way. Field experiments have become successful because they assess causal claims in ways that other methods of evaluation find hard to emulate.

Feminist Engagement with International Criminal Law Norm Transfer, Complementarity, Rape and Consent

Feminist Engagement with International Criminal Law Norm Transfer, Complementarity, Rape and Consent
Feminist Engagement with International Criminal Law: Norm Transfer, Complementarity, Rape and Consent By Eithne Dowds
2020 | 280 Pages | ISBN: 1509921893 | PDF | 22 MB
This work introduces and further develops the feminist strategy of 'norm transfer': the proposal that feminist informed standards created at the level of international criminal law make their way into domestic contexts. Situating this strategy within the complementarity regime of the International Criminal Court (ICC), it is argued that there is an opportunity for dialogue and debate around the contested aspects of international norms as opposed to uncritical acceptance. The book uses the crime of rape as a case study and offers a new perspective on one of the most contentious debates within international and domestic criminal legal feminism: the relationship between consent and coercion in the definition of rape. In analysing the ICC definition of rape, it is argued that the omission of consent as an explicit element is flawed. Arguing that the definition is in need of revision to explicitly include a context-sensitive notion of consent, the book goes further, setting out draft legislative amendments to the ICC 'Elements of Crimes' definition of rape and its Rules of Procedure and Evidence. Turning its attention to the domestic landscape, the book drafts amendments to the United Kingdom (UK) Sexual Offences Act 2003 and to the Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act 1999: thereby showing how the revised version of the ICC definition can be applied in context of the UK.

Fault Lines A primer on race, science and society

Fault Lines A primer on race, science and society
Fault Lines: A primer on race, science and society By Jonathan Jansen, Cyrill Walters (editor)
2020 | 302 Pages | ISBN: 1928480489 | PDF | 4 MB
What is the link, if any, between race and disease? How did the term baster as 'mixed race' come to be mistranslated from 'incest' in the Hebrew Bible? What are the roots of racial thinking in South African universities? How does music fall on the ear of black and white listeners? Are new developments in genetics simply a backdoor for the return of eugenics? For the first time, leading scholars in South Africa from different disciplines take on some of these difficult questions about race, science and society in the aftermath of apartheid. This book offers an important foundation for students pursuing a broader education than what a typical degree provides, and a must-read resource for every citizen concerned about the lingering effects of race and racism in South Africa and other parts of the world.
