Counter-radicalisation policy and the securing of British identity The politics of Prevent

Counter-radicalisation policy and the securing of British identity The politics of Prevent
Thomas Martin, "Counter-radicalisation policy and the securing of British identity: The politics of Prevent"
English | ISBN: 152614008X | 2019 | 208 pages | EPUB | 334 KB
This book offers an innovative account of Prevent, Britain's counter-radicalisation strategy, situating it as a novel form of power that has played a central role in the production and the policing of contemporary British identity. Drawing on interviews with those at the heart of Prevent's development, the book provides readers with an in-depth history and conceptualisation of the policy. The book demonstrates that Prevent is an ambitious new way of thinking about violence that has led to the creation of a

Cosmology and the Scientific Self in the Nineteenth Century Astronomic Emotions

Cosmology and the Scientific Self in the Nineteenth Century Astronomic Emotions
Cosmology and the Scientific Self in the Nineteenth Century: Astronomic Emotions
English | 2022 | ISBN: 303105279X | 457 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 3 MB
This book argues that while the historiography of the development of scientific ideas has for some time acknowledged the important influences of socio-cultural and material contexts, the significant impact of traumatic events, life threatening illnesses and other psychotropic stimuli on the development of scientific thought may not have been fully recognised. Howard Carlton examines the available primary sources which provide insight into the lives of a number of nineteenth-century astronomers, theologians and physicists to study the complex interactions within their 'biocultural' brain-body systems which drove parallel changes of perspective in theology, metaphysics, and cosmology. In doing so, he also explores three topics of great scientific interest during this period: the question of the possible existence of life on other planets; the deployment of the nebular hypothesis as a theory of cosmogony; and the religiously charged debates about the ages of the earth and sun. From this body of evidence we gain a greater understanding of the underlying phenomena which actuated intellectual developments in the past and which are still relevant to today's knowledge-making processes.

Cosmic Magnetic Fields

Cosmic Magnetic Fields
Jorge Sánchez Almeida, María Jesús Martínez González, "Cosmic Magnetic Fields"
English | 2018 | pages: 205 | ISBN: 1107097819 | PDF | 19,6 mb
Magnetic fields pervade the universe and play an important role in many astrophysical processes. However, they require specialised observational tools, and are challenging to model and understand. This volume provides a unified view of magnetic fields across astrophysical and cosmological contexts, drawing together disparate topics that are rarely covered together. Written by the lecturers of the XXV Canary Islands Winter School, it offers a self-contained introduction to cosmic magnetic fields on a range of scales. The connections between the behaviours of magnetic fields in these varying contexts are particularly emphasised, from the relatively small and close ranges of the Sun, planets and stars, to galaxies and clusters of galaxies, as well as on cosmological scales. Aimed at young researchers and graduate students, this up-to-date review uniquely brings together a subject often tackled by disconnected communities, conveying the latest advances as well as highlighting the limits of our current understanding.

Corporate and white-collar crime in Ireland A new architecture of regulatory enforcement

Corporate and white-collar crime in Ireland A new architecture of regulatory enforcement
Joe McGrath, "Corporate and white-collar crime in Ireland: A new architecture of regulatory enforcement "
English | ISBN: 0719090660 | 2015 | 224 pages | EPUB | 622 KB
This book explores the emergence of a new architecture of corporate enforcement in Ireland. It is demonstrated that the State has transitioned from one contradictory model of corporate enforcement to another. Traditionally, the State invoked its most powerful weapon of state censure, the criminal law, but was remarkably lenient in practice because the law was not enforced. The contemporary model is much more reliant on cooperative measures and civil orders, but also contains remarkably punitive and instrumental measures to surmount the difficulties of proving guilt in criminal cases.

Cooperation and Conflict between Europe and Russia

Cooperation and Conflict between Europe and Russia
Magdalena Dembińska, "Cooperation and Conflict between Europe and Russia"
English | ISBN: 1032064382 | 2021 | 126 pages | EPUB | 726 KB
When thinking about relations between Europe and Russia, International Relations scholars focus on why conflict has replaced cooperation. The "geostrategic debate" excludes the possible coexistence of cooperation and conflict. Tracking the evolution of conflict and cooperation patterns in three zones of contact (Estonia, Kaliningrad, and Moldova) between 1991 and 2016, this edited volume argues that, although the standard narrative remains compelling, local patterns of cooperation and conflict are partly autonomous from the geostrategic level. To account for the coexistence of cooperation and conflict, the first chapter elaborates a theoretical proposition distinguishing fluid, rigid, and disputed symbolic boundaries, which have different impacts on the ground. The subsequent chapters address distinct dimensions of Euro-Russian relations, paying attention to local reality in Estonia, Moldova, Ukraine, or Kaliningrad, different sectors from energy to peoples' movement, and across institutional contexts such as the EU and NATO. They confirm that the standard narrative holds in most cases, but also that Euro-Russian relations vary in crucial ways according to the interests and representations of actors immersed in specific geopolitical fields.
