The Correlates of Religion and State

The Correlates of Religion and State
Jonathan Fox, "The Correlates of Religion and State"
English | ISBN: 0367236850 | 2019 | 174 pages | EPUB | 1013 KB
This comprehensive volume examines the nature, causes, and consequences of state religion policy in 183 countries between 1990 and 2014. Each contribution uses round 3 of the Religion and State dataset which includes information on 117 distinct state religion policies. Secular and religious forces in society and government compete in order to influence state religion policy in a vibrant religious economy. While governments are more involved in religion in 2014 than they were in 1990, most states both added and dropped religion policies during this period. This is important because these policies impact on a number of important political, social, and economic phenomena.

The Continuation War 1941-1944 as a Metanoic Moment A Burkean Reading of Finnish Clerical Rhetoric

The Continuation War 1941-1944 as a Metanoic Moment A Burkean Reading of Finnish Clerical Rhetoric
The Continuation War 1941-1944 as a Metanoic Moment: A Burkean Reading of Finnish Clerical Rhetoric By Jouni Tilli
2013 | 247 Pages | ISBN: 3631641273 | PDF | 2 MB
The study explores an aspect of Finland in World War II that has received little attention. The research examines how Lutheran priests contributed rhetorically to the war effort against the Soviet Union in the Continuation War 1941-1944. The war was emDescriptionted using six dramatic analogies: apocalypse, holy war & crusade, election & mission, jeremiad, the war within, obedience and mortification. Changes from an offensive phase in 1941 to an almost chaotic retreat in summer 1944 could be explained using rhetoric that was familiar to all Finns. The material consists of texts by bishops, chaplains and other priests. Priestly power is examined using the concept of metanoia, a radical transformation of mind. The textual analysis relies on Kenneth Burke's theory of symbolic action.

The Conservative Challenge to Globalization Anglo-American Perspectives
Ray Kiely, "The Conservative Challenge to Globalization: Anglo-American Perspectives"
English | ISBN: 1788210964 | 2020 | 224 pages | EPUB | 406 KB
Ray Kiely examines the conservative discourse of "winners" and "losers" of globalization that has emerged since the financial crisis and which has been used to reflect real and imagined threats to domestic economies and national identity. Both the election of Donald Trump and the UK's Brexit vote are potent examples of the success of this conservative (anti-)globalization rhetoric, which has informed popular mantras of deregulation and economic nationalism.

Greg Egan, "The Clockwork Rocket: Orthogonal Book One"
English | ISBN: 1597802271 | 2011 | 344 pages | EPUB | 1169 KB
In Yalda's universe, light has no universal speed and its creation generates energy. On Yalda's world, plants make food by emitting their own light into the dark night sky. As a child, Yalda witnesses one of a series of strange meteors, the Hurtlers, that are entering the planetary system at an immense, unprecedented speed. It becomes apparent that her world is in imminent danger - and the task of dealing with the Hurtlers will require knowledge and technology far beyond anything her civilization has yet achieved! Only one solution seems tenable: if a spacecraft can be sent on a journey at sufficiently high speed, its trip will last many generations for those on board, but it will return after just a few years have passed at home. The travelers will have a chance to discover the science their planet urgently needs, and bring it back in time to avert disaster.

English | ISBN: 1635687977 | 2017 | 530 pages | EPUB | 614 KB
In this work, Allan Trawinski will test, and disprove, the commonly held hypothesis that the present West-Near East Conflict is a relatively new development (since the founding of the State of Israel in 1948), is primarily driven by religion/culture (radical Islamic fundamentalism against Christianity/Judaism), and that terrorism is employed as the Near East's primary method/weapon/tactic of choice, which could all be ended by solving the Palestinian-Israeli (religious) problem, ending radical terrorism, becoming energy independent, liberating the region from despots, and establishing prosperous economic and democratic regimes in their wakes.
