Regulating Capital Setting Standards for the International Financial System

Regulating Capital Setting Standards for the International Financial System
David Andrew Singer, "Regulating Capital: Setting Standards for the International Financial System "
English | ISBN: 0801476712 | 2010 | 176 pages | EPUB | 707 KB
Financial instability threatens the global economy. The volatility of capital movements across national borders has led many observers to argue for a reformed "global financial architecture," a body of consistent rules and institutions to prevent financial crises. Yet regulators have a decidedly mixed record in their attempts to create global standards for the financial system. David Andrew Singer seeks to explain the varying pressures on regulatory agencies to negotiate internationally acceptable rules and suggests that the variation is largely traceable to the different domestic political pressures faced by regulators.

Reglobalization

Reglobalization
Matthew Louis Bishop, "Reglobalization "
English | ISBN: 0367639300 | 2021 | 146 pages | EPUB | 1014 KB
This book charts the way towards a better, repurposed globalization, which it calls 'reglobalization', and shows how this can be built, incrementally but realistically, via reforms to the partial and fragile existing structures of global governance.

Regionalism in Hard Times Competitive and post-liberal trends in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas

Regionalism in Hard Times Competitive and post-liberal trends in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas
Mario Telò, "Regionalism in Hard Times: Competitive and post-liberal trends in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas"
English | ISBN: 1138206679 | 2016 | 86 pages | EPUB | 675 KB
Brexit confirms that the EU is not a super-state in the making but rather an advanced regional organization. This book bridges the gap between EU studies and international relations by providing a student-friendly presentation of regional, multidimensional cooperation among neighbouring states and societies, its four epochs and relevant variations and similarities across five continents, its interplay with globalization, and the changing post-hegemonic and post-Cold War international order.

Region-Making and Cross-Border Cooperation New Evidence from Four Continents

Region-Making and Cross-Border Cooperation New Evidence from Four Continents
Elisabetta Nadalutti, "Region-Making and Cross-Border Cooperation: New Evidence from Four Continents "
English | ISBN: 1138719072 | 2018 | 182 pages | EPUB | 840 KB
This book explores the nature of regions and how they function, particularly at the local and micro-level. Whilst recent years have seen a resurgence in debates around the roles which regions can play in development, the focus has tended to be on 'macro' regional institutions such as the EU, ASEAN, ECOWAS or MERCOSUR. In contrast, this book offers a nuanced analysis of the important field of sub-regionalism and sub-national cross-border cooperation.

Re-Living the Global City GlobalLocal Processes

Re-Living the Global City GlobalLocal Processes
John Eade, "Re-Living the Global City: Global/Local Processes "
English | ISBN: 113884733X | 2017 | 134 pages | EPUB | 554 KB
Living the Global City (1996) was a landmark text in the field of Global Studies, offering an analysis of globalization and global/local processes by focussing on specific issues and themes which include community, culture, milieu, socioscapes and sociospheres, microglobalization, poverty, ethnic identity and carnival. In this new collection Eade and Rumford draw together scholars whose work has engaged with the original volume over the last 15 years and the result is a unique and thematically coherent collection of essays which both complements the original book and challenges some of its core assumptions.

Re-Grounding Cosmopolitanism Towards a Post-Foundational Cosmopolitanism

Re-Grounding Cosmopolitanism Towards a Post-Foundational Cosmopolitanism
Tamara Caraus, "Re-Grounding Cosmopolitanism: Towards a Post-Foundational Cosmopolitanism "
English | ISBN: 1138913340 | 2015 | 260 pages | EPUB | 530 KB
Leading experts and rising stars in the field explore whether cosmopolitanism becomes impossible in the theoretical framework that assumed the absence of a final ground. The questions that the volume addresses refer exactly to the foundational predicament that characterizes cosmopolitanism: How is it possible to think cosmopolitanism after the critique of foundations? Can cosmopolitanism be conceived without an 'ultimate' ground? Can we construct theories of cosmopolitanism without some certainties about the entire world or about the cosmos? Should we continue to look for foundations of cosmopolitan rights, norms and values? Alternatively, should we aim towards cosmopolitanism without foundations or towards cosmopolitanism with 'contingent foundations'? Could cosmopolitanism be the very attempt to come to terms with the failure of ultimate grounds?

Ratio of Surface Area to Volume in Nanotechnology and Nanoscience

Ratio of Surface Area to Volume in Nanotechnology and Nanoscience
Peter I. Kattan, "Ratio of Surface Area to Volume in Nanotechnology and Nanoscience"
English | 2011 | ASIN: B005T1S6JC | EPUB | pages: 63 | 0.8 mb
This is a concise article detailing the derivations of precise and exact equations for the ratio of surface area to volume for certain geometrical shapes. This ratio is very important in nanomaterials as the noticed increase in this ratio provides these types of materials with distinct properties from their bulk counterparts. The ratio of surface area to volume (called SAVR in this work) plays a very important role in nanotechnology and nanoscience. This ratio is calculated here for various simple geometrical shapes including the cube, the sphere, the cylinder, the cone, four types of prisms, four types of pyramids, the tetrahedron, the octahedron, the dodecahedron, and the icosahedron. In addition to calculating SAVR, the article provides also numerical examples of this calculation showing the increase in this ratio for the cube, the sphere, the cylinder, and the cone. This calculation is enhanced with various tables and graphs for SAVR. The article is the first in our new series on basic nanomechanics. The reader is expected to know the basic mathematical concepts and equations taught in beginning courses of algebra and geometry.

Racism Confronting Injustice, Bias and Inequality

Racism Confronting Injustice, Bias and Inequality
Racism: Confronting Injustice, Bias and Inequality by Scientific American Editors
English | July 15th, 2022 | ISBN: 9781948933254 | 180 pages | True EPUB | 1.70 MB
The murder of George Floyd in May 2020 brought fierce and renewed tensions to issues of anti-Black racism and police violence in the US. The outcry and eruption of protests following Floyd's killing led to a long-overdue reckoning across industries, in politics and in society to confront white supremacy and racial injustice. For Scientific American, part of this reckoning is to make a commitment to improved and wider reporting of racism and to elevate Black and Brown voices. In this eBook, we've gathered some of our most important coverage to date, including how systemic racism is linked to COVID-19 and other public health crises, injustice in law enforcement practices and bias in academia and the scientific community.
