Making Modern Japanese-Style Painting Kano Hogai and the Search for Images

Making Modern Japanese-Style Painting Kano Hogai and the Search for Images
Chelsea Foxwell, "Making Modern Japanese-Style Painting: Kano Hogai and the Search for Images"
English | 2015 | ISBN: 022611080X | 296 pages | PDF | 11.3 MB
The Western discovery of Japanese paintings at nineteenth-century world's fairs and export shops catapulted Japanese art to new levels of international popularity. With that popularity, however, came criticism, as Western writers began to lament a perceived end to pure Japanese art and a rise in westernized cultural hybrids. The Japanese response: nihonga, a traditional style of painting that reframed existing techniques to distinguish them from Western artistic conventions. Making Modern Japanese-Style Painting explores the visual characteristics and social functions of nihonga and traces its relationship to the past, its viewers, and emerging notions of the modern Japanese state.

Making Aid Agencies Work Reconnecting INGOs with the People They Serve

Making Aid Agencies Work Reconnecting INGOs with the People They Serve
Gibson Terry, "Making Aid Agencies Work: Reconnecting INGOs with the People They Serve"
English | ISBN: 1787695123 | 2019 | 197 pages | EPUB | 1153 KB
The development industry is worth billions. International non-governmental organizations (INGOs) have become an integral component in international development and humanitarian response. Yet as recent scandals at Save the Children and Oxfam have highlighted, such organizations can overstep moral boundaries, raising questions about the scale, power and role of INGOs. Are they dedicated to continuous learning and self-improvement, or are they development dinosaurs driven by their own need for survival and by the political agendas of their paymasters? Drawing upon his experience as an international development practitioner-one who has worked with NGOs large and small, international and local, in over 40 countries-and drawing also upon his own academic research, Terry Gibson addresses these questions head on. He combines large-scale industry analysis with attention to the lives and worlds of the people the aid industry aims to serve, and he demonstrates how to overcome barriers between the two worlds and free flows of learning, resources, and even political influences that might lead to better outcomes.

Lucian Selected Dialogues

Lucian Selected Dialogues
Lucian, C. D. N. Costa, "Lucian: Selected Dialogues"
English | 2005 | ISBN: 0199555931, 0192805932 | EPUB | pages: 278 | 2.0 mb
The Greek satirist Lucian was a brilliantly entertaining writer who invented the comic dialogue as a vehicle for satiric comment. His influence was immense, not only on the Greek world, but on later European writers such as Rabelais and Swift. His dialogues puncture the pretensions of pompous philosophers and describe the daily lives of Greek courtesans; they are peopled by politicians, historians, and ordinary citizens, as well as by gods and mythic figures.

Love and Liberation Humanitarian Work in Ethiopia's Somali Region

Love and Liberation Humanitarian Work in Ethiopia's Somali Region
Lauren Carruth, "Love and Liberation: Humanitarian Work in Ethiopia's Somali Region"
English | ISBN: 1501759477 | 2021 | 240 pages | PDF | 9 MB
Lauren Carruth's Love and Liberation tells a new kind of humanitarian story. The protagonists are not volunteers from afar but rather Somali locals caring for each other: nurses, aid workers, policymakers, drivers, community health workers, and bureaucrats. The contributions of locals are often taken for granted, and the competencies, aspirations, and effectiveness of local staffers frequently remain muted or absent from the planning and evaluation of humanitarian interventions structured by outsiders. Relief work is traditionally imagined as politically neutral and impartial, and interventions are planned as temporary, extraordinary, and distant.

Linear Programming

Linear Programming
Linear Programming by Howard Karloff
English | PDF | Reprint of 1991 edition | 149 Pages | ISBN : 0817648437 | 22.5 MB
To this reviewer's knowledge, this is the first book accessible to the upper division undergraduate or beginning graduate student that surveys linear programming from the Simplex Method...via the Ellipsoid algorithm to Karmarkar's algorithm. Moreover, its point of view is algorithmic and thus it provides both a history and a case history of work in complexity theory. The presentation is admirable; Karloff's style is informal (even humorous at times) without sacrificing anything necessary for understanding. Diagrams (including horizontal brackets that group terms) aid in providing clarity. The end-of-chapter notes are helpful...Recommended highly for acquisition, since it is not only a textbook, but can also be used for independent reading and study.
