Plant Ecology, Second Edition

Plant Ecology, Second Edition
Plant Ecology, Second Edition By Mick Crawley
1996 | 736 Pages | ISBN: 0632036397 | PDF | 111 MB
Plant ecology is the scientific study of the factors influencing the distribution and abundance of plants. This benchmark text, extremely well received in its first edition, shows how pattern and structure at different levels of plant organization--from ecophysiology through population dynamics to community structure and ecosystem function--are influenced by abiotic factors (eg, climate and soils) and by biotic factors (eg, competition and herbivory). Adopting a dynamic approach, this book combines descriptive text with theoretical models and experimental data. It will be invaluable reading for both student and practising ecologist alike. In this second edition, the structure of the book has been completely revised, moving from the small scale to the large scale, in keeping with contemporary teaching methods. This fresh approach allows consideration of several new and important topics such as plant secondary chemistry, herbivory, sex, and breeding systems. Additional chapters address topical applied issues in plant ecology including global warming, pollution and biodiversity. The latest edition of a very widely adopted textbookContent: Chapter 1 Photosynthesis (pages 1-27): Harold A. Mooney and James R. EhleringerChapter 2 Plant Water Relations (pages 28-50): John GraceChapter 3 Nutrient Acquisition (pages 51-72): Alastair FitterChapter 4 Life History and Environment (pages 73-131): Michael J. Pilgrim in the Palace of Words A Journey Through the 6,000 Languages of Earth

Pilgrim in the Palace of Words A Journey Through the 6,000 Languages of Earth
Pilgrim in the Palace of Words: A Journey Through the 6,000 Languages of Earth By Glenn Dixon
2009 | 352 Pages | ISBN: 1554884330 | EPUB | 2 MB
Pilgrim in the Palace of Words is about language, about the words that splash and chatter across our tongues. Some six thousand languages are still spoken on the planet, and author Glenn Dixon -- an expert is socio-linguistics and a tireless adventurer -- travels to the Earth's four corners to explore the way these languages create and mould societies. As one philosopher said, languages are Houses of Being. After doing graduate work in linguistics, Dixon wanted to visit these houses or "palaces" himself -- to stroll along their sidewalks, knock on their doors, and peek in their windows. He wanted to see what they were hiding in their basements ... even if it meant a little bit of trouble. In some cases, a whole lot of trouble! Join him on his adventure as, with wit and humour, he works toward a real understanding of how and why we communicate the way we do in the Global Village.

Path Problems in Networks

Path Problems in Networks
John Baras, "Path Problems in Networks "
English | ISBN: 1598299239 | 2010 | 80 pages | PDF | 369 KB
The algebraic path problem is a generalization of the shortest path problem in graphs. Various instances of this abstract problem have appeared in the literature, and similar solutions have been independently discovered and rediscovered. The repeated appearance of a problem is evidence of its relevance. This book aims to help current and future researchers add this powerful tool to their arsenal, so that they can easily identify and use it in their own work. Path problems in networks can be conceptually divided into two parts: A distillation of the extensive theory behind the algebraic path problem, and an exposition of a broad range of applications. First of all, the shortest path problem is presented so as to fix terminology and concepts: existence and uniqueness of solutions, robustness to parameter changes, and centralized and distributed computation algorithms. Then, these concepts are generalized to the algebraic context of semirings. Methods for creating new semirings, useful for modeling new problems, are provided. A large part of the book is then devoted to numerous applications of the algebraic path problem, ranging from mobile network routing to BGP routing to social networks. These applications show what kind of problems can be modeled as algebraic path problems; they also serve as examples on how to go about modeling new problems. This monograph will be useful to network researchers, engineers, and graduate students. It can be used either as an introduction to the topic, or as a quick reference to the theoretical facts, algorithms, and application examples. The theoretical background assumed for the reader is that of a graduate or advanced undergraduate student in computer science or engineering. Some familiarity with algebra and algorithms is helpful, but not necessary. Algebra, in particular, is used as a convenient and concise language to describe problems that are essentially combinatorial. Table of Contents: Classical Shortest Path / The Algebraic Path Problem / Properties and Computation of Solutions / Applications / Related Areas / List of Semirings and Applications

Otherness in Question Labyrinths of the Self

Otherness in Question Labyrinths of the Self
Livia Mathias Simão, Jaan Valsiner, "Otherness in Question: Labyrinths of the Self"
English | 2007 | pages: 424 | ISBN: 1593112327, 1593112335 | PDF | 2,9 mb
This book brings to social scientists a new look at how human beings are striving towards understanding others- and through that effort-making sense of themselves. It brings together researchers from all over the World who have suggested a set of new approaches to the basic research issue of how human beings are social beings, while being unique in their personal ways of being. Issues of social representation, communication, dialogical self, and human subjectivity are represented in this book. The book contributes to the contemporary epistemological and ethical debate about the question of otherness, and would be of interest to educationalists, sociologists, psychologists, and anthropologists. It is an invitation to the wide readership to join in this collective effort towards the construction of new conceptions about myselfothers relationships that allow for innovative understanding of various social practices and problem solving in society.
