UDR Declassified

UDR Declassified
Micheál Smith, "UDR: Declassified"
English | ISBN: 1785374273 | 2022 | 272 pages | EPUB | 488 KB
In UDR: Declassified, Micheál Smith reveals what the British establishment, the British government, and its armed forces knew and had to say about the regiment in recently declassified files. From its formation in 1970 as a locally raised militia, the Ulster Defence Regiment developed into the largest regiment in the British Army. For unionists, service in the UDR was a noble act and often a family tradition; for nationalists, an encounter with the UDR was frequently hostile, often brutal, and sometimes fatal. To the British Army, they were 'a dangerous species of ally,' and a classic militia regiment which was part of a long tradition of the use of such forces by the British Empire.

Turning Parliament Inside Out Practical Ideas for Reforming Canada's Democracy

Turning Parliament Inside Out Practical Ideas for Reforming Canada's Democracy
, "Turning Parliament Inside Out: Practical Ideas for Reforming Canada's Democracy"
English | ISBN: 1771621370 | 2017 | 320 pages | EPUB | 1409 KB
For years, the prospect of parliamentary reform has been a hot-button issue in Canada. More and more Canadians find themselves frustrated with how Parliament works (or doesn't) and end up increasingly checked out from politics as a whole, feeling like their voices don't matter to those in power. When he introduced the "Reform Act" bill in 2013, Conservative MP Michael Chong brought the issue of parliamentary reform to the forefront, proposing changes that would empower MPs and hold party leadership accountable to their caucus-and therefore, to all Canadians. Although the changes required for such reforms are modest, the effects they would have on the Canadian democratic process would be revolutionary.

Truth and Reconciliation Commission Processes Learning from the Solomon Islands

Truth and Reconciliation Commission Processes Learning from the Solomon Islands
Karen Brounéus Department of Peace and Conflict Research Uppsala University Sweden, "Truth and Reconciliation Commission Processes: Learning from the Solomon Islands "
English | ISBN: 178660566X | 2018 | 142 pages | EPUB | 1415 KB
After war, does truth telling lead to more peaceful attitudes between former enemies? This book is the first to study the over-time effect of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) process on people's attitudes towards peace. Focusing on the Solomon Islands TRC process, one of the least known or studied TRC processes in the world, and using surveys, focus groups and in depth interviews, the book reveals some critical issues for peacebuilding. For example, while support of the TRC was consistently quite strong over the two years of the study, there was a sharp decline in trust in the process as well as a significant increase in distrust and suspicion towards ex-combatants over the two-year period. The book shows that the ex-combatants did not feel safe to tell the truth in the TRC and had therefore decided beforehand what to say in the hearings. A systematic telling of untruths thereby took place, severely undermining relationships and peacebuilding in the country. The book weaves the findings from the Solomon Islands with experiences of other post-conflict truth telling process around the world, and suggests practical guidelines for future TRC processes after war.

Trauma - An Engineering Analysis With Medical Case Studies Investigation

Trauma - An Engineering Analysis With Medical Case Studies Investigation
Trauma - An Engineering Analysis: With Medical Case Studies Investigation by M. Y. H. Bangash
English | PDF | 2007 | 850 Pages | ISBN : 354036305X | 81.8 MB
The purpose of this book is to bring together experts from the medical and engineering fields in which trauma acts as a fulcrum in understanding the engineering approach to medical cases. The emphasis of this book is on the retrospective study of medical scenarios as seen from the engineering perspective. An in-depth study is required to ensure the accuracy of both medical and engineering data. Where static, dynamic, temperature and impact loads and velocities/accelerations are unknown; they are evaluated using the material properties and fracture geometry of case studies. From the analytical techniques, a prospective study would assist in predicting the outcome of post-trauma damage. Generally, the book covers a wide spectrum of trauma case studies and could be used in medico-legal test cases.

Transport Curiosities, 1850-1950 Weird and Wonderful Ways of Travelling by Road, Rail, Air and Sea

Transport Curiosities, 1850-1950 Weird and Wonderful Ways of Travelling by Road, Rail, Air and Sea
John Wade, "Transport Curiosities, 1850-1950: Weird and Wonderful Ways of Travelling by Road, Rail, Air and Sea"
English | ISBN: 1399003976 | 2022 | 208 pages | PDF | 48 MB
Over the years many weird and wonderful types of transport have come and gone, some of which succeeded against all odds, others that spectacularly failed, and some that never got beyond a designer's drawing board. Railway engines driven by horses, for example. Or maybe the surprising number of cars, boats and trains driven by airplane propellers. In this book you will find cars that flew, cars that floated on water and boats that ran on roads; steam-powered airplanes, electric submarines, railways driven by pneumatic air, aircraft with flapping wings...and a whole lot more. If you are a person who would like to have flown in an airship, or traveled in a train whose carriage sat on stilts above the sea with its tracks below the water, or dreamed of riding on a London to New York railway that took twelve days to travel the long way around the world, or maybe just fancied fixing your bicycle to a railway track, then this book is for you.
