National Intellectual Capital and the Financial Crisis in Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Switzerland

National Intellectual Capital and the Financial Crisis in Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Switzerland
National Intellectual Capital and the Financial Crisis in Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Switzerland By Carol Yeh-Yun Lin, Leif Edvinsson, Jeffrey Chen, Tord Beding (auth.)
2014 | 109 Pages | ISBN: 1461480205 | PDF | 3 MB
In the first decade of the twenty-first century, the biggest event of worldwide proportion was the 2008 global financial crisis, which was caused primarily by ineffective governance, failed surveillance systems, and implementation flaws. While fiscal and monetary policies succeeded in pulling many countries out of a financial freefall, most economies have performed beneath pre-recession levels as governments continued to struggle with their finances. Examining the financial crisis from the viewpoint of intangible assets provides a different perspective from traditional economic approaches. National Intellectual Capital (NIC), comprised mainly of human capital, market capital, process capital, renewal capital, and financial capital, is a valuable intangible asset and a key source of national competitive advantage in today's knowledge economy. The authors-pioneers in the field-present extensive data and a rigorous conceptual framework to analyze the connections between the global financial crisis and NIC development. Covering the period from 2005 to 2010 across 48 countries, the authors establish a positive correlation between NIC and GDP per capita and consider the impact of NIC investment for short-term recovery and long-term risk control and strategy formulation. Each volume in a series of SpringerBriefs on NIC and the financial crisis provides in-depth coverage of the impact of the crisis, the aftermath, future prospects, and policy implications for a regional cluster. This volume focuses on Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.

Molecular Architectonics and Nanoarchitectonics

Molecular Architectonics and Nanoarchitectonics
Molecular Architectonics and Nanoarchitectonics by David J. Lockwood
English | EPUB | 2022 | 545 Pages | ISBN : 9811641889 | 144 MB
This book is the ultimate assembly of recent research activities on molecular architectonics and nanoarchitectonics by authors who are worldwide experts. The book proposes new ways of creating functional materials at the nano level using the concepts of molecular architectonics and nanoarchitectonics, which are expected to be the next-generation approaches beyond conventional nanotechnology. All the contents are categorized by types of materials, organic materials, biomaterials, and nanomaterials. For that reason, non-specialists including graduate and undergraduate students can start reading the book from any points they would like. Cutting-edge trends in nanotechnology and material sciences are easily visible in the contents of the book, which is highly useful for both students and experimental materials scientists.

Migration, Gender and Social Justice Perspectives on Human Insecurity

Migration, Gender and Social Justice Perspectives on Human Insecurity
Migration, Gender and Social Justice: Perspectives on Human Insecurity By Thanh-Dam Truong, Des Gasper, Jeff Handmaker (auth.), Thanh-Dam Truong, Des Gasper, Jeff Handmaker, Sylvia I. Bergh (eds.)
2014 | 408 Pages | ISBN: 3642280110 | PDF | 5 MB
This book is the product of a collaborative effort involving partners from Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America who were funded by the International Development Research Centre Programme on Women and Migration (2006-2011). The International Institute of Social Studies at Erasmus University Rotterdam spearheaded a project intended to distill and refine the research findings, connecting them to broader literatures and interdisciplinary themes. The book examines commonalities and differences in the operation of various structures of power (gender, class, race/ethnicity, generation) and their interactions within the institutional domains of intra-national and especially inter-national migration that produce context-specific forms of social injustice. Additional contributions have been included so as to cover issues of legal liminality and how the social construction of not only femininity but also masculinity affects all migrants and all women. The resulting set of 19 detailed, interconnected case studies makes a valuable contribution to reorienting our perceptions and values in the discussions and decision-making concerning migration, and to raising awareness of key issues in migrants' rights. All chapters were anonymously peer-reviewed. This book resulted from a series of projects funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada.

Mercenaries to Conquerors Norman Warfare in the Eleventh and Twelfth-Century Mediterranean

Mercenaries to Conquerors Norman Warfare in the Eleventh and Twelfth-Century Mediterranean
Paul Brown, "Mercenaries to Conquerors: Norman Warfare in the Eleventh and Twelfth-Century Mediterranean"
English | ISBN: 1473828473 | 2016 | 272 pages | EPUB | 11 MB
When a band of Norman adventurers arrived in southern Italy to fight in the Lombard insurrections against the Byzantine empire in the early 1000s, few would have predicted that within a generation these men would have seized control of Apulia, Calabria and Sicily. How did they make such extraordinary gains and then consolidate their power? Paul Brown, in this thoroughly researched and absorbing study, seeks to answer these questions and throw light onto the Norman conquests across the Mediterranean. Throughout he focuses on the military side of their progress, as they advanced from mercenaries to conquerors, then crusaders. The story of the campaigns they undertook in Italy, Sicily, the Balkans and the Near East reveals their remarkable talent for war. The dominant role played by a succession of Norman leaders is a key theme of the narrative - a line of ambitious and ruthless soldiers that ran from Robert Guiscard and Bohemond to Roger II and Tancred.
